Ames National Laboratory and Indium Corporation have announced a new research and development partnership aimed at expanding gallium production in the U.S. Gallium is considered an essential material for several high-tech industries, but the U.S. currently depends almost entirely on foreign sources.
The new partnership will use Ames Lab’s automation and AI capabilities to develop a more efficient way to separate and extract gallium from existing industrial processes. The move could help strengthen domestic supply chains for semiconductors, LED lighting, and other advanced technologies.

A proposal by a Kevin O’Leary-backed firm to build Canada’s largest data center in northwestern Alberta is facing pushback from some residents and Indigenous groups.
Hundreds of people poured into the community hall in the hamlet of Grovedale, Alberta, to hear from O’Leary Digital Ltd. officials and their contracted experts last week. For millions of people who carry the APOE4 gene, the strongest known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, changes in brain activity may start years before memory problems become noticeable. Researchers at Gladstone Institutes have now mapped out a series of molecular events that may explain these early brain changes and identified a possible way to reverse them.
In a study published in Nature Aging, scientists used mouse models to show that APOE4 increases production of a protein called Nell2. Elevated Nell2 levels caused neurons to shrink and become unusually overactive. Mice with greater neuron hyperactivity early in life later developed more severe memory problems.
When researchers reduced Nell2 production, neurons returned to a more normal size and activity pattern, even in adult mice carrying APOE4. The findings suggest that drugs targeting Nell2 could one day help lower Alzheimer’s risk in people with the APOE4 gene.

The native asset of the Stellar network, XLM, is back in the spotlight as the blockchain industry moves toward practical real-world use cases. Market observers note that Stellar’s highly efficient, low-cost infrastructure for cross-border payments is increasingly drawing attention on the institutional front.
Commentator Sylvian Guibal notes that as Stellar expands its impact across payments, stablecoins, and tokenized assets, it continues to draw increasing institutional interest.📈
Financial institutions are closely examining blockchain networks that offer cost-effective and practical solutions.
📚 Tokenization refers to creating digital representations of traditional assets — such as stocks, bonds, fund shares, or commodities — on blockchain networks. CBDC stands for central bank digital currency, a digital version of national money issued by central banks.
Potential integration with CBDC could serve as a significant long-term advantage for XLM. With numerous central banks exploring CBDC models, Stellar is reportedly involved in these early-stage conversations.
Stellar’s development team is also continuously rolling out technical updates to enhance scalability and interoperability. Their focus on handling high transaction volumes without sacrificing speed or cost is highlighted as a major advantage for institutional applications.

A court in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao sentenced a man to 10 years and nine months in prison for stealing 107 Bitcoin after memorizing most of a victim’s 12-word wallet seed phrase.
Feng noticed the missing Bitcoin the next day and contacted a blockchain security company before reporting the theft. Police opened an investigation in October 2023. Investigators used wallet records, transaction data and linked IP addresses to connect Zhang to the transfers.
Zhang admitted moving the Bitcoin but called it a “protective takeover” intended to prevent another theft. He also claimed he lost money while speculating and had not cashed out. Transaction records contradicted that account.
“Current policies deny virtual currencies legal-tender status, but do not deny their property attributes,” — the prosecutor handling the case said.
The Qingdao case adds another example of courts protecting crypto ownership while regulators restrict trading.

Massachusetts lawmakers have voted to pass privacy protections that grant the state’s residents new rights over accessing and deleting their data held by big tech giants. The bill also bans companies from selling their users’ precise location data.
The move makes Massachusetts the latest U.S. state to push for stronger consumer privacy rights after years of documented abuses by the wider technology, advertising and social media industries. The bill, if passed into law, will apply to companies that handle or process the personal data of more than 100,000 consumers.
