💊 Scientists Uncover the Earliest Brain Changes That May Predict Alzheimer’s Decades Before Symptoms

For millions of people who carry the APOE4 gene, the strongest known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, changes in brain activity may start years before memory problems become noticeable. Researchers at Gladstone Institutes have now mapped out a series of molecular events that may explain these early brain changes and identified a possible way to reverse them.

In a study published in Nature Aging, scientists used mouse models to show that APOE4 increases production of a protein called Nell2. Elevated Nell2 levels caused neurons to shrink and become unusually overactive. Mice with greater neuron hyperactivity early in life later developed more severe memory problems.

When researchers reduced Nell2 production, neurons returned to a more normal size and activity pattern, even in adult mice carrying APOE4. The findings suggest that drugs targeting Nell2 could one day help lower Alzheimer’s risk in people with the APOE4 gene.

🤑 XLM attracts new institutional interest as cross-border payments rise

The native asset of the Stellar network, XLM, is back in the spotlight as the blockchain industry moves toward practical real-world use cases. Market observers note that Stellar’s highly efficient, low-cost infrastructure for cross-border payments is increasingly drawing attention on the institutional front.

Commentator Sylvian Guibal notes that as Stellar expands its impact across payments, stablecoins, and tokenized assets, it continues to draw increasing institutional interest. 📈

Financial institutions are closely examining blockchain networks that offer cost-effective and practical solutions.🔣 In this landscape, Stellar stands out with its architecture that is particularly well-suited for payment systems, positioning it ahead of many competing blockchains. 🏆

❗️Tokenizing real-world assets is seen as a key driver for Stellar’s long-term growth. As institutions search for regulatory-compliant digital finance solutions, they are turning to networks capable of securely issuing tokenized assets;🔣Stellar’s architecture is considered a strong fit for these needs.

📚 Tokenization refers to creating digital representations of traditional assets — such as stocks, bonds, fund shares, or commodities — on blockchain networks. CBDC stands for central bank digital currency, a digital version of national money issued by central banks.

Potential integration with CBDC could serve as a significant long-term advantage for XLM. With numerous central banks exploring CBDC models, Stellar is reportedly involved in these early-stage conversations.

Stellar’s development team is also continuously rolling out technical updates to enhance scalability and interoperability. Their focus on handling high transaction volumes without sacrificing speed or cost is highlighted as a major advantage for institutional applications. 🚀

🇨🇳💵 Chinese court treats Bitcoin as property in 107 BTC memory theft case

A court in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao sentenced a man to 10 years and nine months in prison for stealing 107 Bitcoin after memorizing most of a victim’s 12-word wallet seed phrase.

⤴️ Feng asked Zhang, an acquaintance who had previously helped with Bitcoin transactions, to assist in cashing out 117 Bitcoin in July 2023. While Feng wrote down the wallet’s 12-word recovery phrase during setup, Zhang memorized 11 of them and later reconstructed the final word to transfer 107 Bitcoin.

Feng noticed the missing Bitcoin the next day and contacted a blockchain security company before reporting the theft. Police opened an investigation in October 2023. Investigators used wallet records, transaction data and linked IP addresses to connect Zhang to the transfers. 🔍

Zhang admitted moving the Bitcoin but called it a “protective takeover” intended to prevent another theft. He also claimed he lost money while speculating and had not cashed out. Transaction records contradicted that account.

➡️Investigators traced the assets through several wallets and found more than 660,000 yuan, or about $97,000, in proceeds sent to a friend’s bank account.

Current policies deny virtual currencies legal-tender status, but do not deny their property attributes,” — the prosecutor handling the case said.

❗️The Licang District People’s Procuratorate argued that Bitcoin carries economic value and gives holders exclusive control through private keys and recovery phrases. Prosecutors said those features meet the criminal-law definition of property, allowing Bitcoin to serve as the object of theft.

➡️The decision does not reverse China’s restrictions on cryptocurrency trading and related financial services. Bitcoin still lacks legal-tender status, and mainland regulators continue to classify many crypto business activities as illegal financial operations.

🧑‍⚖️ China’s Supreme People’s Court said in May that it would study clearer judicial rules for virtual-currency disputes. Local courts have already treated Bitcoin as virtual property in cases involving theft, ownership and recovery.

The Qingdao case adds another example of courts protecting crypto ownership while regulators restrict trading. ⚖️
