💊 Innovega’s smart glasses aim to improve sight for people with visual impairments

Innovega, a company known for its augmented-reality contact lens technology, has turned its focus to a different product for now: smart glasses for people who are visually impaired. Nearly 300 million people worldwide who’ve lost a significant amount of their vision, leaving them unable to read a menu, for example, or recognize a face across the room.

➡️The product, which Innovega calls Gen One, looks like an ordinary pair of glasses and weighs under 70 grams. A camera in the frame captures the scene in front of the wearer. Software tuned to that person’s specific vision condition adjusts magnification, brightness, contrast and sharpness. The result appears on transparent micro-OLED displays over each eye.

➡️When the displays are off, the wearer looks through clear lenses. A tap on the frame or a voice command brings the enhanced view up. The glasses tether to a smartphone for processing.

“The goal is to substantially change the quality of life and independence of tens of millions of people in the U.S. and hundreds of millions globally,” — said Steve Willey, Innovega’s CEO and co-founder.

🔥 Crypto Council for Innovation launches coalition to push for regulatory clarity on vaults

A new coalition is forming, focused on crypto vaults, an increasingly popular mechanism for depositing digital assets and earning yield.

The Crypto Council for Innovation launched the Vault Coalition, with backing led by Galaxy and Morpho. BitGo, a16z, the Avalanche Policy Coalition, and Sharplink are also part of the coalition. 🤝

➡️ Crypto vaults are smart contracts that pool together deposited funds that are then generated to create yield. The process then gives each depositor a vault receipt token representing their share. Over the past year, firms have launched vaults, including Kraken and Tesseract.

❗️Despite their growing experimentation, CCI said vaults are subject to regulatory ambiguity.

“We are at an inflection point," — said Morpho General Counsel Christopher Robins in the statement. "Institutional participants are prepared to deploy, but they require a clear legal roadmap to move forward. The Vault Coalition exists to transform industry expertise into the foundational standards the market demands."

Regulators in the U.S. have opened doors for digital assets amid a friendlier administration to the industry. Over the past year, the SEC has put forth a token taxonomy to clarify its stance on cryptocurrencies. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has also embarked on "Project Crypto" to update the agency's rules around digital assets. 🔄

CCI also references a speech Atkins made last month, where he said the agency needs to clarify how its regulatory framework applies to software applications and specifically called for clarity around crypto vaults.

The new coalition will focus on writing legal analysis, developing policy principles, and focusing on its regulatory treatment, CCI said. 🚀

🇺🇸 Illinois Governor Orders Pause on Data Center Tax Credits

Governor JB Pritzker issued an order pausing state tax incentives for data centers in Illinois after the state legislature stalled his plan to keep data-center energy costs from affecting local residents’ bills. Pritzker said his order was in response to the legislature’s failure to raise data centers’ electricity rates, given their high energy usage, which he asked them to do in February.

🇫🇮 Finland deploys new system to detect threats to undersea cables

Elisa, a Finnish telecommunications company, has installed detection equipment on its undersea cables to monitor the critical infrastructure. The system is based on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), which turns the undersea cable into a long sensor that registers vibrations coming from the sea floor.

"The protection of undersea infrastructure is a nationally important task. The recent cable breaks in mind, we have built a solution that provides an early warning of an approaching threat,” — Elisa New Business Director Jouni Petrow said. “Our goal is to use the early warning system to alert the authorities even before the first damage occurs."

⤴️ Undersea cables carry about 99% of global internet traffic, with transactions worth billions of dollars going over them daily. However, this infrastructure is often left unguarded because of how sprawling the global submarine internet cable is.

The system has since been successfully tested, and it’s now being developed to automatically inform the Finnish Border Guard and the Finnish Navy, as well as the owner of the cable, of any irregularities.

💊 Scientists Uncover the Earliest Brain Changes That May Predict Alzheimer’s Decades Before Symptoms

For millions of people who carry the APOE4 gene, the strongest known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, changes in brain activity may start years before memory problems become noticeable. Researchers at Gladstone Institutes have now mapped out a series of molecular events that may explain these early brain changes and identified a possible way to reverse them.

In a study published in Nature Aging, scientists used mouse models to show that APOE4 increases production of a protein called Nell2. Elevated Nell2 levels caused neurons to shrink and become unusually overactive. Mice with greater neuron hyperactivity early in life later developed more severe memory problems.

When researchers reduced Nell2 production, neurons returned to a more normal size and activity pattern, even in adult mice carrying APOE4. The findings suggest that drugs targeting Nell2 could one day help lower Alzheimer’s risk in people with the APOE4 gene.

🤑 XLM attracts new institutional interest as cross-border payments rise

The native asset of the Stellar network, XLM, is back in the spotlight as the blockchain industry moves toward practical real-world use cases. Market observers note that Stellar’s highly efficient, low-cost infrastructure for cross-border payments is increasingly drawing attention on the institutional front.

Commentator Sylvian Guibal notes that as Stellar expands its impact across payments, stablecoins, and tokenized assets, it continues to draw increasing institutional interest. 📈

Financial institutions are closely examining blockchain networks that offer cost-effective and practical solutions.🔣 In this landscape, Stellar stands out with its architecture that is particularly well-suited for payment systems, positioning it ahead of many competing blockchains. 🏆

❗️Tokenizing real-world assets is seen as a key driver for Stellar’s long-term growth. As institutions search for regulatory-compliant digital finance solutions, they are turning to networks capable of securely issuing tokenized assets;🔣Stellar’s architecture is considered a strong fit for these needs.

📚 Tokenization refers to creating digital representations of traditional assets — such as stocks, bonds, fund shares, or commodities — on blockchain networks. CBDC stands for central bank digital currency, a digital version of national money issued by central banks.

Potential integration with CBDC could serve as a significant long-term advantage for XLM. With numerous central banks exploring CBDC models, Stellar is reportedly involved in these early-stage conversations.

Stellar’s development team is also continuously rolling out technical updates to enhance scalability and interoperability. Their focus on handling high transaction volumes without sacrificing speed or cost is highlighted as a major advantage for institutional applications. 🚀
