🇯🇵 Japan's SBI Securities, Rakuten Securities plan to offer crypto investment trusts

Two major Japanese securities firms plan to introduce cryptocurrency investment trusts once the Financial Services Agency finalizes the regulatory framework for such products.

SBI Securities, the online brokerage business and investment banking unit of SBI Group, one of Japan’s largest financial companies and Rakuten Securities, the online broker subsidiary of Japan’s Rakuten Group internet conglomerate, will offer investment vehicles that allow customers to access crypto through their existing accounts. The products will make it easier for clients to gain exposure to the industry.

The offerings will include exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and be developed by firms within the broader holding groups. In April, the Japanese government approved a draft amendment classifying cryptocurrencies as financial products under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, rather than treating them as payment tools. If passed by parliament, the law could take effect in fiscal 2027.

🇨🇳 China deploys moon-tested basalt fibers to protect farmland from desertification

A new wave of anti-desertification projects has been launched in western China as authorities step up efforts to shield farmland from worsening land degradation.

Last month, the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography began several initiatives focused on sand control, desertification prevention, and tackling wind erosion and soil salinity. According to Chinese media, the programs are intended to strengthen an ecological barrier protecting agricultural land across Xinjiang.

The region remains a central testing ground for China’s vast “great green wall” campaign, a decades-long effort to stop fertile land from turning into desert under pressure from climate shifts and human activity.

⚡️🇮🇷 Iran may be turning the Strait of Hormuz into a bitcoin-based insurance market, local reports say

State-linked Fars News reported that Iran’s economy ministry has been working on a plan to manage shipping through the Strait using marine insurance policies and financial responsibility certificates, with payments settled in bitcoin.

🟠The platform, called Hormuz Safe, is said to offer cover for maritime cargo moving through the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and nearby waterways. Fars said that policies would be issued quickly, carry cryptographic verification and become active once payment is confirmed.

❗️Fars said the model could generate more than $10 billion for Iran, but did not explain how that figure was calculated.

The proposal is still early and details remain thin. But if Hormuz Safe becomes operational, it would place bitcoin at the center of one of the world's most sensitive trade routes, as a settlement tool for an Iran-linked insurance product tied to cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz.

⚡️🪙 Bitcoin Depot, North America's largest bitcoin ATM operator, files for bankruptcy

Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin Depot, which once operated the largest network of BTC ATMs in North America, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is shutting down.

🟠The Atlanta-based company filed voluntarily in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, saying it would wind down operations and sell its assets in an orderly, court-supervised process. Its entire ATM network has already been taken offline.

"States have imposed increasingly stringent compliance obligations, including new transaction limits, and in some jurisdictions, outright restrictions or bans on BTM operations; and operators have faced increasing litigation and regulatory enforcement," — Alex Holmes, CEO of Bitcoin Depot, said in the press release.

The company operated 9,276 kiosks, allowing customers to convert cash into bitcoin in retail locations throughout the U.S., Canada and Australia. The company went public on Nasdaq in 2023.

❗️The company's collapse comes at a moment when the broader industry is riding a wave of institutional adoption through alternative investment vehicles such as ETFs and the recent progress of the Clarity Act.

🇦🇺 Australia Plots Next Step in Tokenized Bond Market Expansion

Australia’s central bank and financial regulators are laying the groundwork for a potential expansion of tokenized bond markets as policymakers seek to push the country’s wholesale financial system further into the digital era.

The Reserve Bank, alongside Australia’s corporate watchdog ASIC, the prudential regulator APRA, Treasury and the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre, outlined an 11-point program on Monday. It followed a yearlong industry experiment that found tokenized assets and digital settlement systems could improve the efficiency of wholesale markets.

💊 Living robot swarms built from algae can split, merge, and target wounds with light

Scientists have developed living microrobot swarms made from algae and nanoparticles that can assemble into custom shapes under blue light and disperse on command with red light. The biohybrid system could one day help deliver drugs directly to wounds or diseased tissue using smart bandage-like platforms.

The research team used the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to create reconfigurable swarms capable of changing shape, size, and position in real time. The study also demonstrated an AI-assisted wound treatment concept.

Researchers used image-segmentation software to identify suspicious wound regions and generate a matching light mask. The microrobots were then assembled onto medical tape and released directly into the wound area. Researchers reported that nearly 90% of the biohybrids transferred into the wound cavity in under two minutes.

🤖 Bill Gates’ nuclear firm acquires South Korean tech for 345-MW US sodium-cooled reactor

A delegation of engineers from the United States nuclear developer TerraPower, which is backed by Bill Gates, has completed a training program at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). This training concludes a 7 billion won ($4.67 million) technology transfer agreement.

🤝 Through this deal, the US company acquired South Korean intellectual property and manufacturing design data for a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) safety testing facility known as STELLA.

“This training is a hands-on international education program organized at the request of TerraPower, a US company pursuing the ‘Natrium’ project, a next-generation sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) development project,” — said KAERI in a press release.

An SFR is a nuclear reactor design that utilizes liquid sodium as a coolant instead of water. Liquid sodium has excellent heat transfer properties, allowing the reactor to operate at higher thermal efficiency and lower internal pressures.

🇬🇧UK’s financial payments network is ready for tokenization, regulators say

The Bank of England (BOE) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) set out their approach to tokenization and its use in U.K. financial markets and said they are seeking public feedback on the proposal.

📝 In a joint statement, the regulators said it's time for the public and private sectors to utilize the technology in financial infrastructure to drive economic growth and innovation. Tokenization is the process of representing a real-world asset in the digital environment of a blockchain.

"Tokenisation has the potential to transform wholesale markets – reshaping how assets are issued, traded and settled," — Simon Walls, executive director of markets at the FCA, said.. "We want to support firms in adopting this technology to lower costs, reduce risk and unlock new services."

❗️The regulators said they are looking for views on "where existing rules and infrastructure support or constrain the safe use of this technology." The deadline for responses is July 3. The central bank also published its plans to extend settlement in the country's money-transmission mechanisms to 24/7 operation.

🔥 Why Everything Suddenly Feels Connected

Finance, AI, infrastructure, digital identity, automation, coordination systems — subjects that once felt unrelated now keep moving toward the same environment at the exact same time. And the deeper you look into these shifts, the harder it becomes to see them as isolated developments happening independently from one another.

Usually the transition starts quietly — inside infrastructure, perception, incentives, and the invisible logic connecting systems together underneath the surface. 🧩

And by the time the larger pattern becomes obvious to everyone, the foundation has often already changed. 🔴
