🧑‍⚖️ Ex-worker of Tokyo Electron gets 10-year jail term in TSMC trade secrets case

A Taiwan court fined the local unit of Japan's Tokyo Electron T$150 million ($5 million), and handed jail terms of up to 10 years to five individuals convicted in a case ‌relating to TSMC's sensitive chip technology. The ruling comes in one of Taiwan's highest profile cases involving national security charges linked to unlawfully obtaining trade secrets from TSMC, the world's biggest contract manufacturer of advanced AI chips.

Four of the defendants violated Taiwan's National Security Act by intending to use trade secrets outside Taiwan, the court said, adding that images of the information were found on the Japanese company’s cloud system. Chen Li-ming, a former employee of both TSMC and Tokyo Electron, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while terms ranging from two to six years were handed to three other former TSMC employees.

🤖 Archaeologists use AI to generate image of Pompeii victim

Archaeologists in Italy's Pompeii have for the first time used AI to reconstruct the appearance of one of the victims of the volcanic eruption that destroyed ‌the ancient Roman city nearly 2,000 years ago. The AI-generated image, released by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, shows a man ducking for cover while holding a large bowl over his head, with a flaming Mount Vesuvius in the background.

It is based on the recent discovery of the remains of a male adult, just outside one of the southern gates of the city. Archaeologists believe the man was killed by a shower of volcanic rocks, in the early hours of the second day of the eruption, while trying to escape towards the sea. He was also ‌carrying a lamp and 10 bronze coins.

"If used well, AI can contribute to a renewal of classical studies, illustrating the classical world in a more immersive way," — the head of the archaeological park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said.

🌌 Meta Seeks to Power Data Centers With Energy Beamed From Space

Meta Platforms Inc. is looking to power AI data centers with solar energy collected in space, taking a novel approach to meeting its insatiable demand for electricity. The technology would increase the return on investment from building solar farms and reduce reliance on fossil fuels — if it can be deployed at scale.

Meta clinched a deal for up to 1 gigawatt of space solar energy from Overview Energy, a startup seeking to collect sunlight in satellites orbiting Earth and convert it into electricity to support the grid. A gigawatt is roughly equivalent to the power generated by a nuclear reactor.

Motif Neurotech, a BCI company developing technologies for mental health, announced that the FDA has approved an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) for the RESONATE Early Feasibility Study. “We founded Motif to build neural devices that give everyone suffering from a mental health condition the opportunity at a better life,” — said Jacob Robinson, Co-founder and CEO of Motif Neurotech.

Central to that mission are the nearly 3 million Americans living with treatment-resistant depression, most of whom have exhausted available treatments without finding lasting relief.

🤖 DeepMind’s David Silver just raised $1.1B to build an AI that learns without human data

Ineffable Intelligence, a British AI lab
founded a mere few months ago by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, has raised $1.1 billion in funding at a valuation of $5.1 billion. The round was led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Index Ventures, Google, Nvidia, and others.

“If successful, this will represent a scientific breakthrough of comparable magnitude to Darwin: where his law explained all Life, our law will explain and build all Intelligence,” — its site claims.

Ineffable aims to create a “superlearner” capable of discovering knowledge and skills without relying on human data by leveraging reinforcement learning — a technique in which AI systems learn through trial and error rather than studying human-generated examples.
