๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Japan is considering imposing age-based restrictions on social media as global curbs spread

Japan's communications ministry plans to require social media platforms to conduct stricter age verification of users to address issues such as addiction and bullying among youth. The ministry, however, said it is undesirable to introduce a blanket age-based restriction like those being adopted overseas, given the role of social media as an important communication tool.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US Seeks to Halt US AI Model โ€˜Exploitationโ€™ by Chinese Rivals

The Trump administration unveiled measures aimed at preventing Chinese developers from improperly using leading American AI models to build a rival generation of chatbots, marking the first major US response to Silicon Valley companiesโ€™ complaints that China is piggybacking on their success.

In a memo the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy said it will promote wider information sharing by US-based developers and increase efforts to help the industry detect unauthorized extraction of their AI models. The US government will also work with industry to determine how to rein in such abuses and hold bad actors accountable.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Pentagon ends mandatory flu vaccines for service members

The Defense Department said effective immediately, the annual influenza vaccine is voluntary for all active-duty and reserve troops, including civilian personnel in the department.

โ€œThe notion that a flu vaccine must be mandatory for every service member, everywhere, in every circumstance, at all times, is just overly broad and not rational,โ€ โ€” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said.

Service members may still choose to receive the vaccine, but it is no longer a condition of service, marking a sweeping reversal of a longstanding health policy.

๐Ÿค– SpaceX targets in-house GPUs as it warns investors of chip supply, costs

SpaceX may be tackling one of the biggest challenges in โ€Œthe chip business: manufacturing graphics processing units, or GPUs. Ahead of SpaceX's $1.75 trillion IPO expected this summer, the company has warned prospective investors of its big spending plans to develop AI and other technologies.

It lists "manufacturing our own GPUs" among the "substantial capital expenditures" it is undertaking, according to excerpts of its S-1 โ€‹registration reviewed. Companies file this document to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to disclose their risks and finances before going โ€‹public.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿค‘ U.S. military runs Bitcoin node, sees crypto as power projection versus China

Adm. Samuel Paparo, head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, has told Congress the military is running a live node on the Bitcoin network and testing it for national security purposes.

"Bitcoin has incredible potential as a tool for American power projection," โ€” he said. Paparo also added that it has great potential as tool for national security.

Paparo said the node is not being used to mine Bitcoin but to monitor activity and run operational tests on securing and protecting networks using the Bitcoin protocol.

"We have a node on the Bitcoin network right now," โ€” Paparo said, responding to questions from Rep. Lance Gooden. "We're not mining Bitcoin. We're using it to monitor, and we're doing a number of operational tests to secure and protect networks using the Bitcoin protocol."

The disclosure is notable because Bitcoin is designed to resist control by powerful governments, yet a U.S. combatant command is now directly participating in the peer-to-peer network.

Amazon Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. have struck a multibillion-dollar deal for the social-media giant to rent hundreds of thousands of Amazonโ€™s general-purpose chips for its AI efforts. The multiyear deal gives Meta access to the Graviton line of processors.

Meta is also spending aggressively to develop its own silicon to help reduce costs and decrease its dependence on third-party chipmakers. The company is currently developing four iterations of its MTIA chip for AI purposes, and recently announced an expanded partnership with Broadcom for help designing and building those chips.

๐Ÿค– New 3D device computes using living brain cells

Researchers at Princeton University have created a three-dimensional neural network device that combines living brain cells and advanced embedded electronics. This 3D bioelectronic computer was programmed to differentiate patterns using computational techniques.

To build the device, the team created a 3D mesh of microscopic wires and electrodes supported by a thin layer of epoxy. They then cultured tens of thousands of neurons into a vast 3D network that can perform computation, using the mesh as a scaffold.

The technology couldn't only help uncover the computing secrets of the brain but can also assist in understanding and possibly treating neurological diseases. It could also play a role in solving one of AIโ€™s key bottlenecks: power consumption.

๐Ÿง‘โ€โš–๏ธ Tennessee bans crypto ATMs statewide, joining Indiana in fraud crackdown

Tennessee has become the second U.S. state to outright ban crypto ATMs, making it a misdemeanor to operate or host the machines anywhere in the state. Gov. Bill Lee signed House Bill 2505 into law on April 13 after it passed both chambers unanimously. It was officially codified on Thursday and will take effect July 1.

โŒ It prohibits the installation or operation of "virtual currency kiosks," commonly known as bitcoin ATMs, which are often found in gas stations, convenience stores and shopping malls. The law applies to crypto ATM operators as well as businesses that allow them on their property.

โ—๏ธViolations carry a Class A misdemeanor, which can result in penalties of up to one year in prison and a $2,500 fine.

๐ŸŸ Crypto kiosks themselves are not inherently fraudulent. They function as point-of-sale machines that let users buy and sell cryptocurrencies for cash and transfer funds to external wallet addresses.

๐Ÿ“ˆ But for years, international scammers have been using them to facilitate billions of dollars in fraud. Cryptocurrency kiosks were tied to nearly $390 million in reported losses in 2025 alone, according to FBI data, with older Americans accounting for a disproportionate share of victims.

โš–๏ธ DeFi Education Fund and other crypto leaders press SEC to lock in DeFi broker guidance

The DeFi Education Fund, alongside 35 other crypto industry leaders, is urging the SEC to formalize its recent decentralized finance interface guidance into formal rulemaking โ€” a move supporters see as positive for long-term blockchain development.

๐ŸŸ In a letter this week sent to the SEC, crypto groups pressed the agency to conduct rulemaking after it released a statement earlier this month that clarified certain user interface providers, such as DeFi wallets, do not need to register as broker-dealers.

"Specifically, the Commission should consider adopting a principles-based framework that provides clear, objective criteria for when activity falls within the definition of โ€œbroker,โ€ iterating on the criteria in the Statement," โ€” the groups said in the letter.

"Finalizing these principles would provide the legal certainty needed to support responsible innovation while preserving the Commissionโ€™s ability to regulate the intermediaries that pose the risks that the broker-dealer regulatory regime was designed to address," โ€” the groups added.

๐Ÿค Other advocacy groups signed the letter, including Crypto Council for Innovation, the Blockchain Association, and the Solana Policy Institute. Aave Labs, Andreessen Horowitz, Uniswap Labs, and Mysten Labs, Inc. also signed on.

On April 13, the SEC's Division of Trading and Markets released a staff statement to delineate that interfaces, such as DeFi wallets, would generally not be considered a broker-dealer and said it was an "interim step while the Commission continues to consider various regulatory issues."

โ—๏ธThe DeFi Education Fund and other groups called the SEC's statement "an important step," but warned that the guidance may not have staying power.
