🕵🏼‍♂️ Ofcom investigates Telegram and teen chat sites

Ofcom has launched an investigation into Telegram under the UK’s Online Safety Act, to examine whether it is complying with its duties to prevent child sexual abuse material being shared.

"This problem extends to big platforms too, and teen-focused chat services are too easily being used by predators to groom children. These firms must do more to protect children, or face serious consequences under the Online Safety Act,” — Suzanne Cater, Director of Enforcement at Ofcom, said.

The UK’s online safety watchdog has also opened investigations into Teen Chat and Chat Avenue to examine whether they are meeting their duties to prevent children from the risk of being groomed by predators.

💊 Gene therapy trial for deafness adds evidence to drug’s efficacy

Three years after researchers first injected deaf children with a treatment designed to give them hearing, an early scientific consensus is emerging: this gene therapy works.

A team of researchers published the most promising results to date: in a clinical trial in China, 90% of participants reported significant improvement in their hearing after receiving an injection. The therapy even improved hearing in a few adults, including a 32-year-old. The results were published in Nature.

“In some patients, the hearing improved so well that they can hear whispers,” - said Zheng-Yi Chen, Mass Eye and Ear otolaryngologist. “To reach a stage where you can hear normal conversation, it’s mind-boggling.”

🇺🇸🇦🇪 Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that he backed the idea of providing economic support in the form of a currency swap to the U.A.E.

Scott Bessent said that providing a currency swap to the Emirates could benefit the US by stabilizing foreign exchange markets and protecting American assets around the world.

“Swap lines, whether it’s from the Federal Reserve or the Treasury, are to maintain order in the dollar funding markets and to prevent the sale of the U.S. assets in a disorderly way,” - Mr. Bessent said. “The swap line would both benefit the U.A.E. and the U.S.”

A currency swap would entail the US purchasing the Emirates’s currency, the dirham, so that it has more dollars for handling its oil sales transactions.

MoneyGram and the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) today announced a multi-year extension of their partnership. This milestone marks more than five years of turning stablecoin potential into real-world utility and financial inclusion.

Since 2021, MoneyGram and SDF have delivered industry firsts:
🟠 The world's largest cash on/off-ramp for digital assets

⚖️ More than 100 crypto firms urge Senate to move on U.S. market structure bill

Acoalition of U.S. crypto companies and trade groups called on the Senate Banking Committee to proceed with a markup of the Clarity Act, a bill that would create a federal framework for crypto markets. More than 100 signatories are backing the effort.

These include high-profile companies including Coinbase, Circle Internet, Kraken, Ripple, Andreessen Horowitz, Paradigm, Consensys, Anchorage Digital and Galaxy Digital alongside developer groups, state blockchain associations and university chapters of Stand With Crypto.

➡️ In a letter to Chairman Tim Scott, Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren Subcommittee Chairwoman Cynthia Lummis and Ranking Member Ruben Gallego, the group argued that action by government agencies alone cannot deliver stable rules.

The coalition flagged six priorities for lawmakers to address.🔣These include preserving consumer rewards tied to payment stablecoins, defining oversight roles for the SEC and CFTC, and protecting developers who build non-custodial tools. It also called for disclosure rules that are easier to follow and a federal standard that avoids a patchwork of state laws.

❗️The group warned that the absence of U.S. legislation risks pushing investment, jobs and development offshore.

"America needs clear, comprehensive rules for digital asset markets. It is a global race to the top, and it is important for the U.S. to lead,” — Ji Hun Kim, CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation, in an email.
