🗺 China develops crystal that could enable GPS-free navigation for submarines, missiles

Scientists from Xinjiang University in China have developed a new ultraviolet (UV) producing crystal that could help build extremely accurate thorium nuclear clocks. Essential for tasks like guidance, this could help navigate things like submarines or deep-space probes without GPS in the future.

The new crystal can convert laser light into very short wavelength ultraviolet light (145.2 nm). This is short of the 148.3 nm, but beats the previous world record of 150 nm, which is a major achievement.

Scientists believe that nuclear clocks which use vibrations in atomic nuclei instead, could be 10-1000 times more accurate. This development is groundbreaking as atomic nuclei are more stable than electrons, and less affected by things like temperature. They are also less impacted by external vibration and other things like magnetic fields.

💊 Scientists discover way to treat lung cancer and its deadly side effect together

Researchers at Oregon State University have designed a new way to tackle two of the most devastating effects of lung cancer at the same time: tumor growth and severe muscle loss. Lung cancer is frequently linked to cachexia, a serious condition that causes extreme muscle wasting and contributes to up to 30% of cancer-related deaths among affected patients.

In tests using mice, the research team, led by Oleh Taratula and Yoon Tae Goo of the OSU College of Pharmacy, engineered lipid nanoparticles to carry follistatin messenger RNA. Once inside a tumor, this genetic material directs cells to produce follistatin, a protein known for its dual role in slowing tumor progression and supporting muscle growth.

“By loading our LNPs with follistatin mRNA,we developed a therapy that simultaneously targets lung cancer and cancer cachexia, all without adverse effects,” — Taratula said. “More preclinical work is necessary, but we’re very encouraged by what we’ve seen so far and hope that testing in humans is down the road.”

🌍 The largest orbital compute cluster is open for business

The largest compute cluster currently in orbit was launched by Canada’s Kepler Communications in January, and boasts about 40 Nvidia Orin edge processors onboard 10 operational satellites, all linked together by laser communications links. Kepler wants to be a layer that provides network services for other satellites in space, or drones and aircraft in the sky below.

In the new partnership, Sophia Space, a startup, will upload its proprietary operating system to one of Kepler’s satellites and attempt to launch and configure it across six GPUs on two spacecraft. This is the first time it will be attempted in orbit. Making sure the software works in orbit will be a key de-risking exercise for Sophia ahead of its first planned satellite launch in late 2027.
