🤖 Japanese firm develops optical fiber with 4x traffic capacity, could be used for undersea cables

As the development of 5G communications, AI models, and cloud services accelerates across the world, so does the demand for transferring massive amounts of data. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT), a Japanese telecommunications giant, just announced the development of a four-core multicore optical fiber (MCF) that delivers quadruple the capacity of conventional fiber without increasing its thickness or diameter.

The MCF contains four different cores (instead of the usual single core) surrounded by glass cladding. Signals are then sent through the MCF through spatial multiplexing, essentially allowing a single cable to carry four independent optical paths inside it. Since more undersea cables bundle up to 48 fibers together, NTT’s technology means that just one cable run can now carry as many as 192 cores.

This technology is expected to be rolled out in 2029, meaning telecom companies can start deploying it in their projects in just a few years’ time. Aside from accommodating increased traffic, the MCF could potentially reduce deployment times without the need to completely overhaul the existing system.

🌊 World’s fastest private ‘underwater supercar’: Dutch firm launches mini-sub with 11.5 mph speed

U-Boat Worx, has unveiled its new “underwater supercar” mini-sub called the Super Sub. Reportedly the fastest ever made, the mini submersible is capable of speeds of roughly ten knots (11.5 mph/18/5 kph). The sub can carry three people in total (1 pilot and two passengers) and is capable of reaching depths of 984 feet (300 meters). It is powered by a 62 kWh battery giving the sub enough juice to explore the depths for up to 8 hours.

Passengers are able to get a near-360-degree unobstructed view of the depths thanks to the sub’s acrylic bubble cockpit, allowing passengers to feel truly connected to the underwater world. The Super Sub is currently undergoing trials in Curaçao, an island situated north of Venezuela. U-Boat Worx has confirmed that final preparations for a handover to its first owner are now underway.

⚡️🇨🇺🇷🇺 U.S. to allow Russian oil tanker to reach Cuba, breaking blockade

The U.S. is allowing a Russian tanker full of crude oil to reach Cuba, in an easing of ‌the de facto oil blockade that Washington has imposed on Cuba. The tanker, which is carrying an estimated 730,000 barrels of oil could reach Matanzas, Cuba, by Tuesday. The Russian ship’s arrival would shift the trajectory of a rapidly accelerating crisis in Cuba, buying the island nation at least a few weeks before its fuel reserves run out.

Yesterday two Mexican sailboats, the “Friendship” and “Tigermoth” that disappeared at sea while delivering humanitarian aid to Cuba on Thursday have safely docked at Havana’s port. The vessels are part of the Nuestra América convoy, an international aid convoy made up of groups and individuals, largely from Latin America and Europe.

“We arrive with a simple but powerful message: solidarity with the Cuban people doesn’t stop at borders. It crosses oceans,” — said Adnaan Stumo, coordinator of the Nuestra América convoy.

🇺🇸 Elon Musk has his sights set on a Texas city for another high-tech underground tunnel

Elon Musk is looking to transform the city of Dallas, Texas with an underground tunnel transportation system, which will connect the University of North Texas at Dallas with University Hills — a retail and recreation space that is under construction. The purpose is to create a faster route between two highly trafficked locations to ease the flow of roadway traffic. Rather than take up more land space, it will basically serve as a modern subway system. The project is being helmed by the Boring Company.

💻 IBM quantum computer accurately simulates real magnetic materials

Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Quantum Science Center (QSC) and IBM have utilized a 50-qubit IBM Quantum Heron processor to simulate the quantum dynamics of KCuF3, a magnetic crystal. The study, published in a pre-print, demonstrates that current-generation quantum hardware can produce quantitatively reliable simulations of real materials.

The simulation accurately reproduced the dynamical structure factors (DSFs) of the magnetic material, which represent the energy and momentum exchange of incident neutrons with the spins in the crystal. These findings support the viability of utility-scale quantum simulation prior to the realization of full fault-tolerance, which IBM projects for 2029.

🌐 Researchers develop ground-penetrating 'Wi-Fi' tech with 100m range

A group of South Korean researchers at the ETRI has successfully created a new underground wireless networking technology capable of penetrating as much as 100 meters below the Earth's surface. This new method takes advantage of magnetic induction to provide clear communication with devices underground and avoids signal attenuation and degradation. The ETRI is reportedly already looking to implement this technology into smartphones.

Having this technology in more portable devices would expand the accessibility of underground wireless communication to virtually all industries and individuals who work or engage in recreation in tunnels and caves. This tech could potentially allow emergency services to communicate with individuals lost or stuck underground. The ETRI has also reportedly discussed the possibility of this technology being useful for offshore drilling and national defense.

🤑 Stellar hot off the press: Why Privacy Matters More Than Ever in 2026

In 2026, the race has shifted to something quieter and far more consequential: Privacy. Privacy can’t be abstract. It has to be operational. Transparency builds trust. Privacy is what allows that trust to scale. Stellar is building privacy into an ecosystem that already processes billions in regulated payments.

“Openness and privacy aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, we're making privacy a priority,” — said Denelle Dixon, CEO and Executive Director of the Stellar Development Foundation.

The Stellar network’s X-Ray protocol is brutally honest in its metaphor. X-rays don’t obscure reality. They reveal exactly what matters and nothing more. Privacy is being treated: not as a shield, but as a filter. BN254, an elliptic curve used widely across the zero-knowledge ecosystem, and Poseidon, a hash function designed specifically for zero-knowledge proofs.

These aren’t end-user features. They’re foundational components. The kind of cryptographic infrastructure that everything else has to sit on.

The deeper design choice is philosophical. Stellar doesn’t treat privacy as all-or-nothing. Privacy is opt-in. Configurable. Implemented at the application layer. A token can be confidential. A payment can be shielded. An identity attribute can be selectively disclosed. Or none of the above. The network remains transparent by default.

Transparency and privacy aren’t opposites. They’re complementary components of trust. Transparency creates accountability. Privacy creates safety. Institutions need both. Consumers need both. Regulators need both.

And perhaps most importantly, real-world money already lives on Stellar. Payroll systems, remittances, B2B payments, aid distribution.

🤑 Pi’s big Stellar upgrade kicks in: the Pi Mainnet is upgrading to Protocol 21

Pi Network (PI) is rolling out a critical chain upgrade, dubbed as Protocol 21. Stemming from the same code like Stellar Lumens (XLM), Pi’s mainnet now requires each network node validator to upgrade the firmware to the latest version by April 6, 2026.

Nodes are the fourth role in the Pi ecosystem and run on laptops and desktops instead of mobile phones. Similar to other blockchains, Pi Nodes will be responsible for validating transactions on a distributed ledger and resolving the challenges in maintaining a distributed currency by having all nodes come to a “consensus” on the order of new transactions that are being recorded.

Unlike nodes that use proof of work such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, Pi Node uses a different consensus algorithm based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP). In SCP, nodes form trusted groups (quorum slices) and only agree to transactions that those trusted nodes agree to.

With Pi Network (PI) silently following in the footsteps of Stellar (XLM), the regulatory compliance could accelerate Pi Coin’s listing procedures. This month, Kraken listed Pi Coin on their Spot market offerings.
