Implantable drug delivery may soon look very different. Instead of daily pills or injections, patients could rely on tiny devices that produce medicine inside the body. A U.S.-led research team co-led by Northwestern University have built a new biohybrid system HOBIT — an implant that houses engineered cells capable of producing multiple therapies at once.
HOBIT is producing oxygen directly within the implant. The system uses electrochemical reactions to split nearby water molecules, ensuring a steady local supply. To test the platform, scientists engineered cells to produce three biologics simultaneously. These included an anti-HIV antibody, a GLP-1-like peptide used for type 2 diabetes, and leptin, which regulates appetite. The team implanted the device under the skin of rats and tracked drug levels over 30 days. Results showed consistent delivery across all three therapies in oxygen-supported implants.
The researchers now plan to test the device in larger animal models. A single implant could replace repeated dosing and reduce the burden on patients. If successful, the technology could simplify treatment for chronic diseases.

Ripple Labs CEO Brad Garlinghouse touted Ripple's growth since making some key acquisitions while also warning that additional crypto legislation may take longer than expected during the interview.
▪️In 2025, Ripple invested approximately $4 billion into the crypto ecosystem through investments, mergers, and acquisitions. That firm bought Hidden Road for $1.25 billion and GTreasury for $1 billion.
"We're going to have a record quarter," — he said, adding that Ripple has been "on a tear" after last year's high-profile buying spree.
This year, Ripple’s focus is on bringing these businesses together to unlock synergies rather than launching new ventures. Ripple aims to deepen corporate adoption, expand its brokerage arm, and strengthen the utility and trust in XRP.
▪️Garlinghouse called the joint framework a “huge step forward” after years of enforcement and urged Congress to codify SEC-CFTC guidance into law to avoid another Gensler-style crackdown that could harm crypto innovation and US competitiveness.
“We want to make sure that we can’t have another Gary Gensler moment where they try to weaponize policy in a way that is about politics, not about what’s good for the U.S., which is why we need to see these things codified,” — he argued.
▪️Complications with lawmakers agreeing on CLARITY's rules have slowed things down, Garlinghouse said. While he previously expected the act to be signed by the end of April, he now has it being finalized by the end of May.
“From this White House, we’re seeing amazing leadership to push this forward,” — Garlinghouse said. “I think we’re going to get there. It’s just taking a little longer than we thought.”
Passage of the key market structure bill would not materially change Ripple’s business but would “unlock” US banks that have been hesitant to engage with crypto and encourage more financial institutions to participate in the industry.

Canada’s federal government has moved to ban cryptocurrency donations to political campaigns, shutting down a fundraising channel. Bill C-25, the Strong and Free Elections Act, introduced March 26, would prohibit political contributions made in BTC and other cryptoassets, as well as in money orders and prepaid payment products, grouping them as forms of funding that are difficult to trace.
The ban applies across the registered parties, riding associations, candidates, leadership and nomination contestants, and third parties engaged in election advertising. The move comes as U.K. government has also recently announced an immediate moratorium on cryptocurrency donations to political parties, citing concerns that digital assets could be used to hide the origins of foreign money in British politics.

Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have a complicated history. In 2023, the two vowed to fight each other in a cage match that never happened, but things had warmed up by the early days of the second Trump administration. In February of that year, Zuckerberg texted Musk approvingly about his work with the now-defunct DOGE.
"Looks like DOGE is making progress," — the Meta CEO texted. "I've got our teams on alert to take down content doxxing or threatening the people on your team. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help."
The texts, which were published Friday in court documents as part of Musk's lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI, are dated February 3, 2025. That's just a few weeks after Zuckerberg announced Meta's pivot away from content moderation in favor of "free expression." It's also the same day that a US Attorney said he would protect DOGE employees from "disgruntled" critics.

The governments of Tasmania and Victoria have made public transport free from this week amid rising fuel costs in the country. Residents in Victoria will not be charged for public transport for one month from March 31. Tasmania will remove fares for buses and ferries from March 30 to July 1.
“We know the rising cost of fuel is impacting the family budget, and that's why we are stepping up to support Tasmanians when they need it most, delivering one of the state’s most significant cost-of-living measures,” — Tasmanian state premier Jeremy Rockliff said.
“This won’t solve every problem, but it’s an immediate step to help Victorians right now while we keep working on new solutions to make Victoria more affordable,” — Victoria’s premier Jacinta Allan said.

As the development of 5G communications, AI models, and cloud services accelerates across the world, so does the demand for transferring massive amounts of data. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT), a Japanese telecommunications giant, just announced the development of a four-core multicore optical fiber (MCF) that delivers quadruple the capacity of conventional fiber without increasing its thickness or diameter.
The MCF contains four different cores (instead of the usual single core) surrounded by glass cladding. Signals are then sent through the MCF through spatial multiplexing, essentially allowing a single cable to carry four independent optical paths inside it. Since more undersea cables bundle up to 48 fibers together, NTT’s technology means that just one cable run can now carry as many as 192 cores.
This technology is expected to be rolled out in 2029, meaning telecom companies can start deploying it in their projects in just a few years’ time. Aside from accommodating increased traffic, the MCF could potentially reduce deployment times without the need to completely overhaul the existing system.

The U.S. is allowing a Russian tanker full of crude oil to reach Cuba, in an easing of the de facto oil blockade that Washington has imposed on Cuba. The tanker, which is carrying an estimated 730,000 barrels of oil could reach Matanzas, Cuba, by Tuesday. The Russian ship’s arrival would shift the trajectory of a rapidly accelerating crisis in Cuba, buying the island nation at least a few weeks before its fuel reserves run out.
Yesterday two Mexican sailboats, the “Friendship” and “Tigermoth” that disappeared at sea while delivering humanitarian aid to Cuba on Thursday have safely docked at Havana’s port. The vessels are part of the Nuestra América convoy, an international aid convoy made up of groups and individuals, largely from Latin America and Europe.
“We arrive with a simple but powerful message: solidarity with the Cuban people doesn’t stop at borders. It crosses oceans,” — said Adnaan Stumo, coordinator of the Nuestra América convoy.

Elon Musk is looking to transform the city of Dallas, Texas with an underground tunnel transportation system, which will connect the University of North Texas at Dallas with University Hills — a retail and recreation space that is under construction. The purpose is to create a faster route between two highly trafficked locations to ease the flow of roadway traffic. Rather than take up more land space, it will basically serve as a modern subway system. The project is being helmed by the Boring Company.

Researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Quantum Science Center (QSC) and IBM have utilized a 50-qubit IBM Quantum Heron processor to simulate the quantum dynamics of KCuF3, a magnetic crystal. The study, published in a pre-print, demonstrates that current-generation quantum hardware can produce quantitatively reliable simulations of real materials.
The simulation accurately reproduced the dynamical structure factors (DSFs) of the magnetic material, which represent the energy and momentum exchange of incident neutrons with the spins in the crystal. These findings support the viability of utility-scale quantum simulation prior to the realization of full fault-tolerance, which IBM projects for 2029.

A group of South Korean researchers at the ETRI has successfully created a new underground wireless networking technology capable of penetrating as much as 100 meters below the Earth's surface. This new method takes advantage of magnetic induction to provide clear communication with devices underground and avoids signal attenuation and degradation. The ETRI is reportedly already looking to implement this technology into smartphones.
Having this technology in more portable devices would expand the accessibility of underground wireless communication to virtually all industries and individuals who work or engage in recreation in tunnels and caves. This tech could potentially allow emergency services to communicate with individuals lost or stuck underground. The ETRI has also reportedly discussed the possibility of this technology being useful for offshore drilling and national defense.
