Keeping crypto safe from future quantum attacks can mean handling much more data. That can affect how quickly networks run and what transactions cost.

Two updates from the past week show what that looks like.

1️⃣ On September 10, Cloudflare announced support for checking quantum-resistant signatures in 1.1.1.1, its service that looks up website addresses. These signatures help confirm you’re getting an authentic answer.

Each signature of the new type takes 2,420 bytes, compared with 64 for a common existing type. That’s almost 38 times larger. In Cloudflare’s example, the answer exceeds the query’s initial message size limit, so the query tool retries using another way to receive it.

2️⃣ Ethereum researchers are working on a similar issue for transactions. On September 9, draft EIP-8288 was added to Ethereum’s proposal collection. It would let a block carry one proof covering many signatures and other proofs instead of including each of those bulky items separately. It aims to reduce the extra data and cost, but it’s still a proposal.

For anyone using crypto, the concern is straightforward: stronger security needs to work without making everyday transactions too expensive or slowing the network down.

This is relevant to QMS’s planned design. Computational work decides who can add the next block, without digital signatures for that selection step. Protecting accounts and confirming transactions permanently are separate parts of the design, with their own security requirements.

Bitcoin is still debating its quantum migration. Ethereum is targeting December 2029.

We’re designing QMS with signature-free block production and post-quantum finality, so those protections are part of the starting design.

QMS is designed to evolve with computing hardware.

> Classical miners first.
> Hybrid systems as quantum assistance becomes useful.
> Native quantum miners as new methods for proving quantum work are developed.

Each stage builds toward the next.

Ethereum's Post-Quantum Migration Will Take a Decade. QMS Starts With Two Layers Settled Ethereum is the most detailed chain in the industry on post-quantum migration — a dedicated team, around ten client teams building to spec, a $20M three-year formal verification…
Swapping Ethereum’s signatures for post-quantum ones creates a much bigger job than it sounds.

A BLS signature today is 96 bytes. The leanXMSS replacement is 3,112 bytes, and you lose native aggregation along the way.

So now Ethereum has to rebuild that aggregation with zero-knowledge proofs, and that’s just one piece of the migration.

We unpacked the rest here, plus why QMS approaches block production differently.

Adding quantum-resistant signatures to a blockchain leaves a separate job: making them usable and safe in a wallet.

1️⃣ Circle’s Arc can check quantum-resistant signatures in smart contracts. Native wallet transactions using them are still planned.

2️⃣ Ledger’s review of SHRINCS, a draft Bitcoin proposal, highlights a recovery challenge. Rolling back the counter that tracks used signing keys could cause key reuse and enable forgery. When the signing history is lost or uncertain, the design supports recovery through a larger fallback signature.

3️⃣ Researchers also recovered a secret key from an implementation of Falcon, a quantum-resistant signature scheme. The attack required physical access to inject one hardware fault, then about a million ordinary signatures.

QMS brings different sides of the network together.

→ Miners secure the chain and can earn from both block rewards and solving real problems.

→ Clients pay to get optimization problems solved.

→ Users get the security of proof of work, while client payments help reduce the network’s reliance on token inflation.

One network, with useful work built into how it runs.

Find the bugs before real funds depend on the code.

That’s what a testnet is for: trying transactions and wallet interactions with test tokens intended to have no monetary value. The software can change as issues surface.

QMS testnet beta gives you a place to try the available features and flag what needs fixing before production use.

What would you try first on QMS?

The QMS white paper is now live.

It outlines the network we’re building: a layer 1 for the post-quantum era, featuring proof-of-useful-work consensus, no public-key signatures in block production, a separate post-quantum finality layer, EVM-compatible execution, and a path for quantum hardware to join the miner network.

The final section covers how we plan to roll these pieces out progressively over time.

QWAP is building on QMS

Every onchain trade depends on cryptography. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could one day break much of the public-key cryptography that crypto relies on today.

QWAP is building for that future now, on QMS Network.

A post-quantum signature can fail in the math or in the code.

Last week, two papers showed one of each. Both schemes, SNOVA and MAYO, are still under NIST evaluation, which is exactly when you want this found.

➤ SNOVA's signing code leaked secret keys.

IBM Research showed that SNOVA's signer picks some random values slightly more often than others. That small bias was enough to recover secret keys for four of its alternative settings, using 9 to 180 million signatures. The recommended settings weren't affected by this bug, and picking the values evenly would close it.

➤ New math pushed MAYO to change its settings.

Researchers at ETH Zurich and Radboud found a cheaper way to attack this family of signatures. By their estimates, four of MAYO's alternative Round-2 settings fall below their claimed security. After a private heads-up, the MAYO team dropped a setting planned for Round 3 and raised its parameters.

Tomorrow, QMS Testnet Beta opens.

See you at https://qms.finance/

QMS Testnet is now live.

Our first public release. The EVM-compatible execution layer is open — connect a wallet, claim test tokens, and start exploring the chain as it actually runs.

What you can do right now:
→ Add QMS Testnet to your wallet
→ Claim free test tokens from the faucet
→ Swap and provide liquidity on QWAP, an independent DEX built on QMS
→ View transactions on the block explorer

Before you begin: Test tokens carry no monetary value — please don't send real funds to the testnet. Post-quantum wallet signing is not available in this release.

For developers: QMS is EVM-compatible, so you can bring your Ethereum contracts and deploy them with the tools you already use. This first release is your chance to see how they behave on QMS.
