KCNA:Customs of Korean People on First Full Moon Day - Intangible Cultural Heritage of DPRK

Among the folk holidays enjoyed by the Korean people is the first full moon day (January 15th of the lunar calendar).

From olden times, the Korean people have held ceremonial events reflecting their desire for the new year's fortune and rich harvest.

Typical of them are a game of hanging crops on a long pole and enjoying the full moon.

There was a custom of composting fields early in the morning.

On the evening of the day, people irrespective of age or sex enjoyed the full moon on high mountains or hills in their villages, having pleasant talks.

Children played folk games like a game of pursuit, going to the place of enjoying the moon, and sang songs, enjoying the moon.

Special dishes of the day are boiled rice admixed with four other staple cereals and dishes made of nine kinds of dried edible herbs.

On the morning of the day, they drank ear-quickening wine. (…) registered as national heritage in 2014.

Voice of Korea:New Farm Tells

One day in July 2024, the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un visited the Phungo-dong area in the city of Sinpho, South Hamgyong Province, despite midsummer heat and went to a farm. (…)

The officials dissuaded him from going there time and again because it was the sea route on which security could not be ensured. But he did not care.

When the motorboat reached the entrance to the farm, Kim Jong Un looked with an air of satisfaction at the nursery on the expanse of the dark blue sea. After a while, he cast his eyes on a place. He saw ropes floating without buoys. He asked why those ropes were floating on the water. A leading official in the city of Sinpho explained in detail that they were not buoyed at the farm. At this, Kim Jong Un said to the official that he became kindly an expert on aquiculture.

The moment, the motorboat was tilted to one side. Regardless of it, however, Kim Jong Un looked at the dipper. And he smiled, saying the scallops are as tiny as a nail bed.

Admin’s note: summary of the work by President Kim Il Sung "On further developing of Communist Policies" (22/10/1985)

The social security for cooperative farms abolished the difference between working class and peasantry in terms of state benefits.

In a socialist society, the material wealth produced is distributed according to quantity and quality of work done. The principle "to each according to his work" is an important matter for the transitional society we are in. This indicates that, until labour becomes the first requirement in someone’s life, inequality in earnings are normal, even if the differences in living standards are not so great thanks to social ownership of means of production compared to capitalism.

We are carrying communist policies and measures which embody "One for all, all for one!". We should steadily develop and perfect communist policies in accordance with the level of the people's ideological consciousness and the economic level of the country, while strictly maintaining the socialist principle of distribution to suit the transitional character of socialist society.

What are the communist measures we are talking about ? : universal free medical care system (the average lifespan of our people is 36 years higher than before Liberation War), universal free education system (in which all educational institutions train students at state’s expenses), absence of taxes, we build dwelling house with state funds and provide them for free.

In our country the state affords every working person a stable job and guarantees a living; in addition, it takes responsible care of the people who have temporarily lost their working ability, the disabled, and the elderly and children who have no support, by introducing social insurance and security systems for the people. The state also bears the burden of a paid holiday system, recuperation and relaxation systems and a maternity leave system for women workers.

Our food supply system too is a communist policy! The state buys grains from farmers for 60 jon per kilogram, we sell to the workers for 8 jon, I.e only transport fee, which is means it is basically free. It enable anyone to not worry about food and this is compatible with the communist principle "to each according to his needs".

The annual benefit from our free healthcare is 470, education system 560, and a student gain a subsidy of 15 800 won from state funds from his nursery days until he graduates.

I am happy to have such policies that many in our world, even a socialist one, would call "state burdens"! We must still widen the communist policies.

Firstly, food is the top priority. The words are "food, clothing and housing", we must produce rice, until everyone gets hid food easily, we cannot even talk about a socialist society. This is why, in the first phase of socialist construction, I forwarded the slogan "Rice is already socialism". We must increase massively grain production and per-hectare yields. We must reclaim new tidelands, develop agriculture.

Regarding dwelling houses, we built them for everyone, this is fine, but they are not big enough for the demands of the people that are becoming greater.

Regarding schools, we must build new one and provide furnitures/ school supplies for free. We must produce experimental apparatus and reference manuals. We must set a compulsory higher education system. We must intellectualize the whole of society, so that every citizen has the level of a graduate. Higher specialized study-while-you-work institutes must be built.

As the saying goes "what is learned at school is carried to the grave", we must educate children to make them collectivists already in kindergarten, that will be constructed at state expenses. We should run weekly and monthly nurseries, with good hygiene and enough furnitures of médecines and toys.

Medical education must be done efficiently, and we must add Koryo traditional medecine to prevent diseases.

These are the communist policies, that need few conditions to be carried out quickly: First of all, all members of society must be ready politically and ideologically. If we introduce communist policies in a situation where all members of society are not ready politically and ideologically, idlers may appear and it may produce a serious effect. We will build a man of the communist type who places the interest of his country and people above his own.

Alongside this condition, we must provide financial and economic guarantees.

Admin’s note: many of the policies noted by President Kim Il Sung in this work were interrupted by the economic crisis of 90s. We are noticing a comeback of these plans since 2021. This probably explains why this work was republished recently.
