The British Transport Police (BTP) has implemented a new policy allowing recently transitioned officers with a gender recognition certificate (GRC) to strip-search women. The policy, introduced in September and titled "Transgender and Non-Binary Search Position," was authorized by the assistant chief constable for network policing.

This comes after the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) withdrew similar guidance earlier this year due to safety concerns for women. Under the new BTP policy, transgender and non-binary detainees are recognized as their gender identity from the moment they permanently identify as such, whether or not they possess a GRC.

The policy allows for more invasive searches, including removing all clothing during strip searches, as well as allowing officers to choose their uniform and use facilities (like changing rooms and showers) that align with their gender identity. Women's rights advocates have expressed their concerns, writing to the chief constable of BTP over the potential risks to women's safety.
