A simple explanation of what firearms are and aren’t allowed in the UK.

Anyone in the UK may own a gun, so long as they are at least 14 and don’t have a history of severe violence, criminality or mental illness. But you have to have a reason for wanting one that doesn’t involve killing humans (unless you work in security), and store the gun and ammunition separately and securely when not in use.

There are restrictions on certain kinds of guns. Concealable hand guns have to be kept at a secure firing range, not on your person or in the house, unless you live in Northern Ireland and can show the police reason to think a paramilitary group is after you. Civilians aren’t allowed to own automatics unless they work in maritime security, and only certain types of semi-automatic are permitted. Heavy ordnance such as tanks and anti-aircraft guns in civilian hands may only be fired at an army firing range.
