Pointer

What is a Pointer
- A pointer is a variable that stores the memory address of another variable.

-Think of it like a library catalog card that points to the location of a book (data) rather than containing the book itself.

Pointer Basics
Declaration & Initialization
int x = 10;       // Variable
int *ptr = &x; // Pointer storing address of x

- &x → Gets the address of x (e.g., 0x7ffd4abc).
- *ptr → Accesses the value at that address (10).

Visualization
| Variable (x)| Pointer (ptr) |
|------------------|-------------------|
| Value: 10 | Stores: 0x7ffd4abc |
| Address: 0x7ffd4abc | Points to x |

Key Pointer Operations
a) Accessing Values
cout << *ptr;  // Output: 10

b) Modifying Values
*ptr = 20;     // Changes x to 20

c) Pointer Arithmetic (Arrays)
int arr[3] = {10, 20, 30};
int *p = arr; // Points to arr[0]
cout << *(p + 1); // Output: 20 (arr[1])

Why Use Pointers?
Efficiency: Avoid copying large data (pass addresses instead).

Dynamic Memory: Allocate memory at runtime (e.g., new/delete).

Modify Variables in Functions:

   void increment(int *p) { (*p)++; }
increment(&x); // x increases by 1

Practice Exercise
What’s the output?
int a = 5, b = 10;
int *p = &a;
*p = b;
cout << a;

Answer Output: 10 (Pointer p modifies a’s value).

Function

What is a Function?
A function is a reusable block of code that performs a specific task.

Think of a vending machine:
- Input (Parameters): You select a snack (e.g., B3 for chips).
- Process (Function Body): The machine processes your request.
- Output (Return Value): It delivers the chips.

Function Components
a) Declaration (Menu)
// Like the vending machine's menu
int getDrink(int selection);

- Tells the compiler a function exists.

b) Definition (Machine Internals)
// Like the machine's internal mechanism
int getDrink(int selection) {
if (selection == 1) return COKE;
else return WATER;
}

c) Call (Pressing the Button)**
int myDrink = getDrink(1);  // Output: COKE

Types of Functions
-Library Function
sqrt(25) (from <cmath>)

-User-Defined
calculateTax(income)

Parameter Passing
a) Call by Value (Photocopy)
void printReceipt(int amount) {
// Works with a COPY of the original
cout << "Amount: " << amount;
}

- Like giving a photocopy of your ID – changes don’t affect the original.

b) Call by Reference (Original Document)
void updateBalance(int &account) {
account -= 100; // Modifies the ORIGINAL
}

- Like signing the original contract – changes are permanent.

Example:
int wallet = 500;
updateBalance(wallet); // wallet becomes 400

Why Use Functions?
Reusability: Like a recipe you reuse (e.g., calculateInterest()).

Modularity: Break problems into smaller parts (e.g., login(), checkout()).

Debugging: Fix one function without breaking others.

Exam-Style Example :
// Function to check even numbers
bool isEven(int num) {
return (num % 2 == 0);
}

Common Mistakes
1.Missing Return Statement:

   int sum(int a, int b) {
a + b; // Error! No return.
}

2.Incorrect Parameters:

   void greet(string name) { ... }
greet(); // Error! Missing argument.

Real-World Coding Example
Scenario: A coffee shop calculator.

#include <iostream>
using namespace std;

// Function to calculate total cost
float calculateTotal(int coffees, float price) {
return coffees * price;
}

int main() {
int cups = 3;
float cost = calculateTotal(cups, 2.5);
cout << "Total: $" << cost; // Output: $7.5
return 0;
}

Key Insight:
- calculateTotal is like a cashier – you give inputs (cups, price), it returns the result.

4.
Ternary Operation (Short hand of if -else)

if(condition )? True: False;

for example
int x=1
int y=if(x>2)?5:6;

So if x is greater than 2 Y will be 5

else Y will be 6
in this case Y will be 5

12<5 False
3<=5 True
3>2 True

!(F or T and True) ?7:9;
!(T)?7:9;
False ? 7:9;
