Google revises its strategy for how Chrome handles third-party cookies. Going forward, Chrome will block third-party cookies by default only in Incognito mode. The company also plans to review its use of Privacy Sandbox technologies and outline a new roadmap in the coming months.
Last summer, Google backed away from its plan to completely remove third-party cookies from Chrome. Instead, it proposed showing users a dialog box to confirm consent to blocking.
Now, that idea has been abandoned entirely. Third-party cookie blocking will only happen if users enable the feature in their Privacy & Security settings. This means that Chrome will retain the approach of allowing third-party cookies by default, but allowing users to manually enable blocking if they wish.
In addition to revising its cookie blocking strategy, Google has announced plans to enable IP protection in Incognito mode. The feature will launch in the third quarter of this year. IP protection hides a userโs real IP address by routing traffic through proxy servers. When enabled, websites will only see the proxy server's IP address, similar to using a VPN.

New EU Energy Labels for Smartphones and Tablets: What You Need to Know
Starting June 20, 2025, the European Union will enforce new energy labeling and ecodesign requirements for smartphones and tablets. These regulations aim to promote sustainability, enhance device durability, and provide consumers with transparent information to make informed purchasing decisions.
๐ Key Features of the New Energy Label
The updated energy label, similar to those on household appliances, will include:
- Energy Efficiency Rating: A scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient).
- Battery Life: Indicates the duration a device operates on a full charge.
- Durability Score: Assesses resistance to accidental drops and scratches.
- Repairability Index: Rates how easily a device can be repaired.
- Charging Cycles: Number of full charge cycles the battery can endure while maintaining at least 80% capacity.
- IP Rating: Shows the level of protection against dust and water.
These labels will be mandatory for all smartphones and tablets sold within the EU from the specified date.
๐ ๏ธ Ecodesign Requirements for Manufacturers
In addition to labeling, manufacturers must comply with several ecodesign requirements:
- Battery Durability: Batteries must withstand at least 800 full charge-discharge cycles while retaining 80% of their original capacity.
- Spare Parts Availability: Critical spare parts must be available within 5 to 10 working days and continue to be supplied for 7 years after the product is discontinued.
- Software Updates: Devices must receive operating system updates for a minimum of 5 years from the end-of-sale date.
- Repair Access: Professional repairers must have non-discriminatory access to necessary software and firmware for repairs.
These measures aim to enhance device longevity and reduce electronic waste.
๐ฑ Devices Covered by the Regulation
The regulations apply to:
- Smartphones and tablets with screen sizes up to 17.4 inches.
- Cordless landline phones and feature phones.
- Devices with rollable displays and Windows-based tablets are currently excluded or covered under separate frameworks.
๐ Impact on Consumers and the Environment
These initiatives are expected to:
- Empower Consumers: Providing transparent information to make informed choices.
- Promote Sustainability: Encouraging the use of longer-lasting, repairable devices.
- Reduce E-Waste: Extending device lifespans to minimize electronic waste.
- Conserve Energy: Aiming to save approximately 14 terawatt-hours of energy annually by 2030.
These changes reflect the EU's commitment to a circular economy and environmental conservation.
