Cryptographic Analysis of Delta Chat | UseNiX

We analyse the cryptographic protocols underlying Delta Chat, a decentralised messaging application which uses e-mail infrastructure for message delivery.

It provides end-to-end encryption by implementing the Autocrypt standard and the SecureJoin protocols, both making use of the OpenPGP standard. Delta Chat's adoption by categories of high-risk users such as journalists and activists, but also more generally users in regions affected by Internet censorship, makes it a target for powerful adversaries. Yet, the security of its protocols has not been studied to date. We describe five new attacks on Delta Chat in its own threat model, exploiting cross-protocol interactions between its implementation of SecureJoin and Autocrypt, as well as bugs in rPGP, its OpenPGP library. The findings have been disclosed to the Delta Chat team, who implemented fixes.

Note:

In March 2025, Google announced a change to its internal workflow. Previously, some of Android's development was visible in public AOSP repositories in real-time, while most was done privately within Google. To improve efficiency, Google is now conducting all of its Android development privately.
However, Google will continue to publish the complete, finalized source code for every stable Android release to AOSP. This means that while the day-to-day development is no longer public, the end result remains open source.

Autofocus (AF) on smartphones is the process of determin-
ing how to move a camera’s lens such that certain scene content is in
focus. The underlying algorithms used by AF systems, such as contrast
detection and phase differencing, are well established. However, deter-
mining a high-level objective regarding how to best focus a particular
scene is less clear. This is evident in part by the fact that different smart-
phone cameras employ different AF criteria; for example, some attempt
to keep items in the center in focus, others give priority to faces while
others maximize the sharpness of the entire scene.

There are two predominant types of passive AF: phase difference autofo-
cus (PDAF) and contrast detection autofocus (CDAF). PDAF operates at a
hardware/optics level and aims to adjust the lens position such that the phase
between two light rays coming from a scene point is matched. The PDAF hard-
ware module can be designed in two ways: (1) half sub-mirror with line sensor
as used in older DSLR cameras [1,2] and (2) on-sensor dual-pixel layouts used
in modern DSLR and smartphone cameras [3,4]. Compared with CDAF, PDAF
methods are able to approximate the optimal lens position in a single processing
step; however, PDAF alone is generally not sufficient to give an accurate focusing
lens position.
CDAF is the most common approach used in DLSR and smartphone cam-
eras. CDAF operates by applying low-level image processing algorithms (i.e.,
gradient magnitude analysis) to determine the sharpness of a single image or region of interest (ROI). Because CDAF works on a single image,
the camera lens needs to be moved back and forth until the image sharpness
measure is maximized.
Any Phone, or any Device for that matter, is about Drivers. When it comes to two way Radios, and Cellular Encryption, it gets even worse.

With all of the individual sub-devices in todays Phones, like Cameras, both EO and IR Sensors, Touch Screens, with Biometric Sensors, and all of that Biometric having to go through the Hardware Layer, Middle Security Layer, and then the Software Layer to work properly, not to mention Sound Boards, Speakers, Video Cards, and then all of the Radio Equipment, and its encrypting Devices, that communicates with the Cellular Providers, its a wonder that linux runs at all.

Just as we know with rooting or flashing Phones, each specific Device has its own specific Hardware Driver Requirements. Every Phone would literally have to have a Custom Linux ROM made specifically for that Model. Most Phones have limited Internal Storage. A "one size fits all" Download is impossible, with the literally millions of Hardware/Driver combinations that would be necessary. The Phone wouldn't even hold the Installer. Most Computers wouldn't hold something that size either.

ROMs are custom brewed by Manufacturers and hacking Devs for that reason. The Phone Manufacturers know this, and purposely make their Hardware Drivers uncompatible in Linux, or other operating systems. Until a group of Devs settle in, get rid of Android, and work on a specific Device, with a specific OS and Driver package, linux in a phone is going to be very rare.
