Arm warns Qualcomm it will cancel its chip design license
Arm Holdings Plc is canceling Qualcomm’s license to design chips with Arm’s intellectual property, escalating their legal battle. Qualcomm relies on this license to produce ARM based chips for smartphones and PCs, contributing to $39 billion in revenue.
Arm has issued a mandated 60-day notice, giving Qualcomm time to address the issue or risk losing the architectural license, which could severely impact its operations.
If Arm terminates the license, Qualcomm could still use Arm’s blueprints through separate agreements, but it would cause delays and waste existing work.
The dispute originated from Qualcomm’s acquisition of Nuvia in 2021. Qualcomm intends to challenge Arm in court.

Linus Torvalds Growing Frustrated By Buggy Hardware & Theoretical CPU Attacks
21 October 2024 - Frustrated Torvalds
Over the past week Linux creator Linus Torvalds has been active on a Linux kernel mailing list thread around avoiding barrier_nospec() in copy_from_user() due to being "overkill and painfully slow." The conversation evolved into low-level discussions over CPU behavior and how to best handle, differing behavior/requirements with new Intel CPUs supporting Linear Address Masking (LAM), and the overall headaches these days around CPU security mitigations.
