📱De-Googled Phones Staying Alive
Google removed device trees from Android 16, making it harder for GrapheneOS and others to build private, de-Googled phones. These trees were crucial for adapting Android to real devices—now developers must reverse engineer it all.
GrapheneOS is biting the bullet to make this happen despite this challenge. I donated $5,000 to support their work and encourage you to do the same: grapheneos.org/donate
There are few ways to use a phone privately today—and Google is making it harder. The future of private Android depends on supporting open-source alternatives.
Support matters. Spread the word.

Microsoft is removing outdated and superseded drivers from Windows Update for security and compatibility reasons. The company is going to maintain a clean, up-to-date driver repository by periodically expiring legacy drivers that are no longer optimal for modern devices.
In the first phase, drivers with newer replacements already available are being expired, meaning they will no longer be offered to any systems. Hardware partners can request to republish expired drivers but may need to provide justification. A six-month grace period allows vendors to address concerns before final removal.
This process will continue regularly, with Microsoft expanding the scope over time. Vendors are encouraged to proactively manage their driver submissions. Updated driver publisher guidelines will become available in the near future.

Agent Mode for Gemini in Android Studio is now available in the latest Android Studio Narwhal Feature Drop Canary release!
This new feature lets you describe a complex goal in natural language to Gemini. Agent Mode will then form a plan that can span multiple files in a project and then execute that plan under your direction. It uses a "range of IDE tools for reading and modifying code, building the project, searching the codebase and more" to complete tasks with minimal oversight. It can also interact with external tools like GitHub via MCP.
You can access it from the Gemini sidebar window and then clicking the Agent tab. If you add your own Gemini API key, you can even expand its context window to 1 million tokens.
