🧠 RISC-V: The Open Processor Architecture We Deserve

What’s the future for CPUs? Oregon based company AheadComputing are making a bet on RISC-V. Four of the top chip architects from Intel are now attempt to build the “biggest, baddest CPU in the world” - according to Debbie Marr, the AheadComputing’s CEO.

RISC-V is revolutionary in a few ways:

•One, any company can implement the RISC-V architecture in a processor without paying licensing fees or royalties
•Two, RISC-V is a modular architecture, meaning that there’s a base set of instructions and a number of extensions - so that a processor can be tweaked as needed

Note that RISC-V isn’t an actual processor. It’s an open spec without licensing, which means that anyone can design a processor that implements RISC-V and write software for it.

This sets the stage for an open-source processor, but ultimately depends on the company that develops the processor.

Gemini Space is coming to Pixel phones, and it could be Google's take on Samsung's Now Bar

I found evidence of a 'Gemini Space' feature in the Android 16 QPR beta, and I think it may be Google's version of Samsung's Now Bar/Brief.

Here's what I know👇

Fairphone 6 Renders
Source

Fairphone 6 be more "modular" due to interchangeable accessories such as a card holder, a lanyard, and a retaining ring that makes it easier to hold the device. Various parts will be replaceable by users themselves including battery, front camera, top internal cover, the earpiece, the speaker, the USB-C port and even the display which is a 6.31-inch FHD+ LTPO pOLED. Unfortunately, all of that repairability does come at the cost of water and dust resistance, as the Fairphone 6 is reportedly just IP55 - certified.

The new design will also allow for mixing and matching between all three back plates, making for a more customizable, two-tone look. Buyers can even combine different colors themselves. Fairphone 6 will debut on 25th June worlwide and will be priced at 550€. It will be powered by Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 SoC.

OnePlus explains why Nord 5 ditched the metal frame

The OnePlus Nord 5 will feature a plastic frame, in contrast to the metal frame used on the OnePlus Nord 4. It's basically a rebranded version of the OnePlus Ace 5 Ultra in China, which comes with the Dimensity 9400+ SoC. The only difference is that OnePlus will offer the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 globally for the Nord 5, a chip that's 2x LESS powerful than the Dimensity 9400+ used in the Chinese market version.

In an exclusive interview with TechRadar, Celina Shi, Chief Marketing Officer at OnePlus Europe was questioned about the rear panel design where she said:

While I can't reveal specifics about the OnePlus Nord 5 Series materials just yet, I can say that it won't be in a metal frame this year.
Our design concept for all of our devices is grounded in consumer insight. Following a global survey conducted across Europe, North America, India, and China, we found that our target audience places strong emphasis on practicality in design.

Which basically means, OnePlus ditched metal frame for plastic frame with the Nord 5 because of buyers' preference, which they found out after conducting the survey in all major global markets.

Another massive data breach, accomplished by "infostealer" malware, which runs on Microsoft Windows environments, but generally not on Linux - again demonstrating how much safer you are if you switch your computers to Linux.

At any rate, if you think you may be affected, it's clearly time to change your passwords. As the bad guys keep doing bad things, we need top continue being one step ahead of them. Stay on top of your digital security.

Carl Pei Says Nothing Acquired Essential Just For Its Name

In February 2021, Nothing acquired Essential which had shut down in 2020 due to lack of sales. While Nothing didn't reveal any details about the acquisition at that time, Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, took part in a video interview where he explained why he bought Essential in 2021.

Carl Pei revealed that his motive behind Essential's acquisition was to secure primarily the Essential name, including access to Essential's domain name, social media handles etc. In short, Essential acquisition was only done for its name, neither for its technology, nor for its talent.

If you're wondering why it was acquired just for the sake of its name, that's because, initially the plan was to use the Essential name for the company's own product lineup instead of Nothing. Nothing Phone 1 would have been called as “Essential R1” as shown in the image.

Before the name Nothing got finalized, Carl Pei was considering "Stone" as an alternative to the Essential name. However, at the end, Carl Pei still chose to go with Nothing as the name of the company. In the purchase of Essential, Pei says that Nothing did NOT gain any of the company’s patents, but rather just the trademarks. Carl Pei refused to reveal how much he paid for Essential when asked in the video as it will breach the NDA they signed.
