Recent Updates to PrivacyGuides

Here are some recent changes to the recommendations on PrivacyGuides:

1. The Android page has been updated with more information about F-Droid. In short, the Droid-ify client is recommended over the official F-Droid client, as it supports seamless updates on Android 12 and targets a higher API level. We also added some recommendations on where you should get your apps.
2. Piped has been added to PrivacyGuides. It works great for cases where you need to view age restricted content without an account or when you want the benefits of Sponsorblock but don't want yet another extension in your browser.

Browsing on mobile iOS: private relay for Safari vs VPN?

Hi. I use an iphone running iOS 15.3. I'm curious what is better from a privacy standpoint for mobile browsing: using the private relay service for Safari offered with iCloud+ subscriptions or using a VPN.

Obviously, using a VPN has an advantage of working on other apps and browsers besides Safari. But let's compare apples to apples (heh) and say I just want to compare browsing on Safari with iCloud+ private relay to browsing on Safari with a VPN: What's better from a privacy standpoint?

And yes, I know: Get rid of Apple, mobile browsing is inherently unsafe, just get a jailbroken android and run /e/os bro, blah blah blah. I'm familiar with those debates. Hashing them out here isn't the purpose of this post.

Thanks

iOS Browser: why Firefox Focus is better than DDG Browser?

I saw that PG recommends Firefox Focus but not DuckDuckGo browser (I use the latter, together with Snowhaze). Any specific reason why Focus is privacy-superior than DDG?

Pixel on GrapheneOS

How did you use one or two pixels in GrapheneOS? When you use a sim card,Shelter....

Because I always hesitate to put a sim card in my secondary pixel, install Shelter if it's worth to install it or not. When you don't use a pixel with a sim card, how do you do it? With an application I don't know or just in a faraday bag?

Encrypted and Anonymous DNS via custom DNScrypt-proxy setup vs Cloudflare DNS

Hi! I have a question concerning my set up for handling DNS requests. Just a heads-up: I'm not the most tech-savvy guy on the block. If I've misused terms or failed to explain something properly, please let me know!

I didn’t like the idea of using my ISP’s DNS resolver, so I decided to look into alternatives. I installed DNScrypt-proxy on my computer (Mac, macOS 12) to take advantage of the possibility of encrypted DNS. I even took the extra time to set up a DNS relay system for anonymous DNS. I’ve been running with this for over a year now and it’s great, but I’m about about to migrate to a new machine and I’m wondering if it’s worth the effort to set it all up again.

While I would be willing to do it again if there’s a huge benefit, I’m curious if there is much of a benefit as opposed to just using Cloudflare as my DNS resolver? It would be a hell of a lot easier to go into my settings and type in 1.1.1.1 once and be done than to download, install, and set up DNScrypt-proxy again on a new machine and take the additional time to modify it further to add relays for anonymous DNS.

Are bluetooth speakers a liability when turned off?

I was reading about speakers sending sounds a human can’t here to other devices and such. If they (bluetooth speakers) are turned off, can they still send or receive data? What about other bluetooth devices?

I want to go all wired so that they can be unplugged but want a few bluetooth things

Looking to self-host a permanent number for SMS that won't be identified as VOIP.

I recently found out the difference between VOIP numbers and non-VOIP and seeing that most places do not support sending 2FA codes to VOIP numbers.

Anyone already researched this?

Any active umatrix fork?

I've been using umatrix for a long time but it's unmaintained for now. I tried to find a fork and the only thing i've found is nuTensor, which also seems unmaintained.

GrapheneOS

I have some questions about GrapheneOS

1.I followed his instructions from Sandboxed Google Play,I opened Google Play Store then sign in. Can I uninstall GP or leave and install Aurora Store?

2. If I have created several profiles, if I do not want to receive a sms/call through the profile option, will it have tracks by the provider ?

3. Is it useful to have Shelter if I use Sandboxed GP ?

4. Is it better to use DNS applications like Nebulo or Private DNS by GrapheneOS ?

5. Can I use a public WiFi with VPN or a cell phone like LTE-only mode by GOS recommendation with VPN when I am outside ?

How to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu with full disk encryption?

Set up:

I have a laptop with 512G SSD and it does not have a second slot for another SSD

I want to dual boot Windows for school stuff with Ubuntu for normal use and the problem is that I also want full disk encryption. So I have thought of a simple way like this:

Install Windows -> install Ubuntu -> full disk encrypt with veracrypt on windows

Will veracrypt encrypt my ubuntu partition also? How to do it the right way?

Preparing for cyberattacks/digital war?

Hey All,

What can I do to make my personal computer more secure? I almost want to factory reset it because of all the junk/permissions I've allowed to accumulate over the last few years. I already have the usual browser extensions installed, but what else can I do to protect my computer as best I can from digital attacks?

Windows 10 user.
