So I want to switch from GDrive (docs/photos/etc.) to something else.

But, I can't really find an affordable alternative.
Now privacy focused costs money. And sadly I can't buy a NAS atm, so need to find something that is online.

Are there some all in one (docs/sheets/photos/drive/etc) that doesn't cost one kidney a year?

Really interested in what you guys are using :)

Tice or location sharing app

I know most people in here would be opposed to location sharing with family but I need to use one and don't want to use something abusing our data like life360. Has anyone used TICE or would you recommend any other apps that allow you to share location with loved ones in a more privacy focused way?

Also have an app for android and ios.

Cannot upload images using hardened Firefox

I have an issue I could use some advice for. I'm using the latest version of Firefox, hardened in the standard ways + these extensions: UBlock Origin, Canvas Blocker, Multi-account Containers, and sometimes No Scrypt (but more often than not No Scrypt is disabled entirely because it breaks so much). In addition, I've maxed out the security and privacy settings in Firefox (including using first-party isolation) and have denied permissions for the camera, microphone, location, notifications, autoplay, and VR. In about:config, I made some changes to DRM-controlled content permissions. That's my entire setup. (I'm like 80% confident I didn't change anything else.)

Everything works fine, and I have no problem at all, except that I cannot upload photos using Firefox. When I try to upload something, all I get is an image that looks like multi-colored TV static. I would include an image, but I did in my first attempt to post this and the post got removed for including an image, so we'll have to stick with a verbal description...

Everywhere else I've seen people reporting a similar issue, they say that the issue is Firefox not displaying images on websites, but rather displaying that kind of distorted static. That is not my issue. Firefox displays images just fine. The problem is that I cannot, myself, upload any images.

I don't have occasion to upload images very often, so I've been ignoring this for about a year now. However, I saw another recent post on here of someone soliciting help with Firefox and decided I might as well try to sort it out. Thanks

Hopefully this attempt to post makes the cut.

What do you think about Startpage ? Is it good to use ? I just ask because I saw on PrivacyGuides website « Startpage proxies Google Search so Google does have access to your search queries ».

I prefer use Qwant because i’m french but sometimes arrrrrrggggghhhhh the results are so bad especially for actuality…

Who do you trust more ?

Currently have a Nextcloud instance on hetzener. That vs iCloud who should we trust more?

Not trying to selfhost at the moment and encrypting all my files with crytomator.

Recent Updates to PrivacyGuides

Here are some recent changes to the recommendations on PrivacyGuides:

1. The Android page has been updated with more information about F-Droid. In short, the Droid-ify client is recommended over the official F-Droid client, as it supports seamless updates on Android 12 and targets a higher API level. We also added some recommendations on where you should get your apps.
2. Piped has been added to PrivacyGuides. It works great for cases where you need to view age restricted content without an account or when you want the benefits of Sponsorblock but don't want yet another extension in your browser.

Browsing on mobile iOS: private relay for Safari vs VPN?

Hi. I use an iphone running iOS 15.3. I'm curious what is better from a privacy standpoint for mobile browsing: using the private relay service for Safari offered with iCloud+ subscriptions or using a VPN.

Obviously, using a VPN has an advantage of working on other apps and browsers besides Safari. But let's compare apples to apples (heh) and say I just want to compare browsing on Safari with iCloud+ private relay to browsing on Safari with a VPN: What's better from a privacy standpoint?

And yes, I know: Get rid of Apple, mobile browsing is inherently unsafe, just get a jailbroken android and run /e/os bro, blah blah blah. I'm familiar with those debates. Hashing them out here isn't the purpose of this post.

Thanks

iOS Browser: why Firefox Focus is better than DDG Browser?

I saw that PG recommends Firefox Focus but not DuckDuckGo browser (I use the latter, together with Snowhaze). Any specific reason why Focus is privacy-superior than DDG?
