DRDO IN NEWS (2024)

• DRDO launches Assault Rifle "Ugram" for Indian Army.
• DRDO unveils indigenous light tank "Zorawar".
• DRDO Successfully Tests Long Range Glide Bomb ‘GAURAV’ from Su-30 MK-I.

• DRDO conducts successful flight test of Very Short-Range Air Defence System, "VSHORADS Missile" from a ground based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha from Integrated Test Range in Chandipur.
• DRDO launched Mission Divyastra, the First flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.

• DRDO in partnership with researchers from the IIT Delhi, has developed ‘ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat)’, a Light Weight Bullet Proof Jacket.
• DRDO successfully conducted a flight test of the new generation ballistic missile called 'AgniPrime'. The Strike range of missile is 1,000 to 2,000 km.

• DRDO successfully flight-tested the RudraM-II Air-to-Surface Missile from Su-30 MK-I platform of the Indian Air Force (IAF) off the coast of Odisha. It is an indigenously-developed solid-propelled air-launched missile system meant for Airto-Surface role to neutralise many types of enemy assets & It is designed to have a strike range of almost 350-km, from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter of the IAF.

• "SARVATRA", a Multispan Mobile Bridging System designed and developed by Armament and Combat Engineering Systems (ACE) of DRDO under the Ministry of Defence. SARVATRA assists the Army in constructing bridges over flowing water, ensuring robust connectivity between two areas during natural disasters.

ISRO In News 2024

• ISRO launches PSLV-C58/XPoSat, India’s 1st X-ray Polarimeter Satellite to study Black Holes & Neutron Stars in Space.

• The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) introduces the “Young Scientist Programme” “YUva VIgyani KAryakram” (YUVIKA) to foster the innate curiosity of children and youth towards space science.

• Indian Astronauts selected to go to Space as part of the Gaganyaan Mission are Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair , Group Captain Ajit Krishnan , Group Captain Angad Pratap & Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla.

• PM Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for the ISRO second spaceport in Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu. The first spaceport, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, is located in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota.

• PM Modi announced India’s own Space Station by 2035.

• ISRO to launch female robot "Vyommitra" to space before astronauts in Gaganyaan.

• ISRO to Launch 1st Base Module of Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2028.

• India’s National Space Commission has approved a new lunar mission, called the Lunar Polar Exploration Mission "Lupex". This mission is a partnership between India’s space agency ISRO and Japan’s space agency JAXA, and it will focus on exploring the Moon’s resources, especially water at the lunar south pole.

• ISRO Develops "PraVaHa" Software For Aerodynamic Design and Analysis.

Shubhanshu Shukla : First Indian Astronaut to Fly to ISS on NASA Mission

• ISRO Astronaut and Indian Air Force (IAF) Officer, Shubhanshu Shukla, will take on the role of pilot on the Axiom Mission4, which will go to the International Space Station (ISS) from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida no earlier than Spring 2025.

• Shukla will make history as the First Indian Astronaut to visit the orbiting laboratory aboard a SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft. He has also been chosen as an Astronaut for India’s Gaganyaan Mission.

Nuclear Power in Union Budget 2025-26

• The Government has set an ambitious target of 100 GW Nuclear Power capacity by 2047, positioning Nuclear Energy as a major pillar in India's Energy mix.

• The Government has allocated ₹20,000 crore for research and development (R&D) of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), aiming to develop at least five indigenously designed and operational SMRs by 2033.

• India plans to increase Nuclear capacity from 8,180 MW to 22,480 MW by 2031-32 by building 10 reactors totaling 8,000 MW across six states.

• A new discovery at Jaduguda Uranium Mine, Jharkhand will extend the mine’s life by more than 50 years.

• The First two units of 700 MWe PHWRs at Kakrapar, Gujarat began commercial operations in FY 2023-24.

• NPCIL and NTPC have formed a joint venture named ASHVINI to develop new nuclear power plants, including the 4x700 MWe PHWR Mahi-Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project.
