UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites

Seven new Natural Heritage Sites from across the country have been included in UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, increasing India’s count on the Tentative List from 62 to 69 properties.

The Ministry of Culture informed that with this inclusion, India now has 49 cultural, 17 natural, and 3 mixed heritage properties.

The newly added sites include :-

▪️Deccan Traps at Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra
▪️Karnataka’s Geological Heritage of St. Mary’s Island Cluster
▪️Meghalayan Age Caves
▪️Naga Hill Ophiolite
▪️Andhra Pradesh’s Erra Matti Dibbalu
▪️Tirumala hills
▪️Kerala’s Varkala Cliffs

13 of the 18 Biosphere Reserves of India are a part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, based on the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme list.

• Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka (2000)

• Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu (2001)

• Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve in West Bengal (2001)

• Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve in Uttarakhand (2004)

• Nokrek Biosphere Reserve in Meghalaya (2009)

• Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve in Madhya Pradesh (2009)

• Simlipal Biosphere Reserve in Odisha (2009)

• Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve in Andaman & Nicobar Islands (2013)

• Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve in Chhattisgarh & Madhya Pradesh (2012)

•  Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve in Kerala and Tamil Nadu (2016)

• Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim (2018)

• Panna Biosphere Reserve in Madhya Pradesh (2020)

• Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve in Himachal Pradesh (2025)
