A 12-year-old boy presents to his pediatrician for ear pain. His ear pain began approximately 5 days ago and is associated with ear itching and mild hearing difficulty. His past medical history is unremarkable. He recently joined the swimming team of his school. Physical examination is notable for otalgia with palpation of the tragus and traction of the pinna. There is mild edema and swelling of the external auditory canal with poor visualization of the tympanic membrane. His ear is cleaned and is started on topical hydrocortisone and ciprofloxacin.
A 4-year-old boy presents to the emergency department with neck pain and shortness of breath. His mother reports that he has been having difficulty with walking and has been complaining of neck pain 1 day prior to presentation. On physical exam, the patient is in the tripod position, drooling, and is unable to speak or cough. Otolaryngology and anesthesiology are consulted to secure his airway. The patient is urgently brought into the operating room for surgical drainage.
A 15-year-old boy presents with clear fluid discharge from his nose for 2 days duration. His also reports having episodes of sneezing, feelings of congestion, and a cough.
