Prelims Result Day.
For some of you, today will feel like sunlight. For some, like a slow earthquake no one else can see. And the strange thing about UPSC is this the world sees only a result. Qualified / Not Qualified. A PDF decides whether people congratulate you… or suddenly go silent.
But behind that one line is a life nobody sees. The 5 a.m. alarms you answered when your body begged for sleep.
The birthdays you skipped.
The weddings you avoided.
The meals eaten with notes in hand. The silent panic before mock scores.
I know this because I have lived this exam. I gave 6 years to UPSC. Cleared prelims multiple times. Reached mains. Scored in ranges where you start believing, “That i am almost there"
And then life teaches you something brutal: Sometimes being very close still means not making it. That truth hurts in ways words cannot capture. If your result is positive today. I’m genuinely happy for you. Celebrate. You earned that smile.
But this message is especially for the ones staring at the screen… unable to move. For the ones calculating cutoffs again and again as if numbers might change. For the ones pretending they’re okay in front of family. For the ones already hearing that terrifying voice in their head:
“What if I’m not good enough?”
Listen carefully.. Your result has revealed an outcome, not your worth. Failing prelims does something cruel. It doesn’t just test knowledge. It attacks identity. You start questioning everything. Was I lazy? Was I delusional? Did I waste years? Am I becoming a burden?
And perhaps the worst pain…Seeing your parents still believe in you when you have started losing belief in yourself. That pain is real. I know.
But I want to say something many won’t tell you. A bad result can lie. It can convince brilliant people they are ordinary. It can convince disciplined people they are lazy. It can convince fighters they are finished. Don’t believe every thought your pain produces tonight.
And one more thing. Please… don’t suffer alone. If you cleared, wonderful. If you didn’t clear, please don’t disappear into silence. Talk to someone. Cry if you need to. Vent. Rage. Feel everything. But don’t isolate. Because some of the darkest battles in UPSC are fought in complete silence behind closed doors, with a smiling face shown to the world.
If nobody around you understands what this feels like, Come text me @sidiswel We do. Not because we read about it. Because many of us have lived it. This community was never built only for ranks and success stories. It was built for the days when you feel broken, confused, ashamed, or lost.
So if today feels heavy message us. No formalities. No judgment. Even if all you want to say is: “Bhai, I’m not okay.” That’s enough. And if nobody has told you this today, let me. I’m proud of you for showing up. This exam demands years from a human life. To stay in the arena itself requires courage most people will never understand.
Whatever happens next. don’t let one result become the final narrator of your story. UPSC is huge. Life is bigger.
Take care of yourself tonight.
