space invaders was such a huge phenomenon in japan when it came out that it caused a shortage of the 100-yen coin. it was also very influential for a lot of future game designers--if you read the old Iwata Asks columns nintendo used to put out a lot of the people interviewed mention space invaders as having a major impact on them
