Passenger vehicle sales in India were the highest ever recorded in fiscal year 2022. Maruti Suzuki, along with Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, Kia, and Toyota, accounted for 90% of PV sales in fiscal year 2022.
Total sales in the January to December 2022 period surpassed prior records of 3.34 million units set in 2018, by a strong 45,000 units, to 3.88 million units in CY 2022.
Maruti Suzuki lead the market in fiscal year 2023 with 16.06 lakh vehicles, a 21% year-on-year increase. Toyota had its best year in sales in a decade, selling 13.38 lakh cars, a 41% increase year on year. Kia experienced a similar 44% increase, but with total sales of 2.69 lakh units. Tata Motors increased their sales by 45% to approximately 5.39 lakh vehicles. Mahindra increased their sales by 65% in fiscal year 2022 to 3,35,088 units, up from 2,03,390 in fiscal year 2021.
Except for Renault India and Nissan India, every automaker on this list has shown YoY sales growth. In fiscal year 2022, 37,80,870 units were sold. (Jan-Dec). This represented a 24% increase over the 30,46,475 units sold in CY 2021, with a volume increase of 7,34,395 units.
The SUV class was India's fastest-growing segment in FY23, with a 35.9% year-on-year increase.
Despite slower growth than the SUV market, the hatchback class increased by 20%, with cumulative sales of 13.4 lakh units in FY23, up from 11.60 lakh units in FY22.
Most major manufacturers have increased output to assure timely delivery of pending orders. As of now, it is projected that there are about 5.50 lakh waiting orders.
Rising demand, as well as the introduction of various new and technologically advanced models, could result in even higher sales figures in the coming years.
