On May 12 2024, graduating students walked out of Duke University commencement to protest Zionist speaker, Jerry Seinfeld, and to call attention to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
These students then held their own alternative commencement on the quad.
Demands from the Duke students’ flyer:
“We call on Duke to DISCLOSE its financial investments in Israel, DIVEST from companies profiting from the occupation of Palestine, BOYCOTT academic partnerships with Israeli universities, and SPEAK in favor of an immediate ceasefire.”

At his graduation ceremony, Naeman Mahmood bravely walked across the stage with the Palestinian flag, and handed over his graduation regalia as well to denounce the institution.
Following this, the stream was cut twice for students who walked with Palestinian flags or Keffiyahs. The graduation livestream was ended early as people chanted, "Disclose, Divest, we will not stop, we will not rest!"
