billboard that sells nothing

· · ·

on the US-Canada border, in Blaine, Washington, there's an empty billboard where ads usually hang. you can see the sky through it

made by Annie Han & Daniel Mihalyo. commisioned by US GSA in 2007, post-9/11, the border had become a political space. they were asked to make the first artwork a person sees entering the US

they didn't make politics, they made "nothing"

· · ·

it's been standing for 16 years

it survived three presidents, covid, almost two years of a closed border, families meeting through loopholes

it survived instagram launching in the same year, infinite scroll, algorithmic feeds. there's more ads, and less time to look around

and the empty frame still stands on the border, with the sky behind it changing every day

probably nothing

Who's behind this booth?

Nikita Lukyanov – visual artist & video director, based in Paris

The booth is simple, but behind it, months of thinking

What confession means without religion
Why people need permission
What single question makes someone say the thing they usually hide

In his words:

Everyo
ne is strange inside. Everyone has something they want to share, but there's never a place or a moment for it. If people stopped hiding it, the world would be more interesting

Stil
l a few spots available

13 june, Paris

If you're around, just come

Nothing

an independent media space built around artists

what's underneath ↓

a space where artists create, the people inside back them,
and the value flows back to make more of it possible

Nothing isn't something we launched. it emerged from what the community started. we shaped it, named it, opened the door wider

the point ↓

built by the people inside

we did it once with clicker -> something out of nothing
now we do it with culture

if you've been here from the beginning, you already know how this works

probably nothing as usual

probablynothing.xyz

👽
artists

before anything else, the numbers:

• major label (15–20% to the artist)

• traditional gallery (40–50% to the artist)

Nothing (70% to the artist, 30% to the fund)

most platforms take their rights, %, visibility, and control. Nothing flips it

nothing starts with the creator, the one who places the first brick

we don't take anything. instead, we give:

• infrastructure – marketplace, logistics, media, events, network

• the fund – helps artist-initiated projects happen and keeps Nothing independent from advertisers and brand deals

the only thing we ask in return ↓

show up. be listed. tell us about the work you want to make

if you're an artist and this resonates, apply to be listed

🫡
people

every art movement has two sets of names: the ones we remember, and the ones who paid for the studios

medici → michelangelo
160,000 new yorkers → statue of liberty pedestal
billions of taps → notcoin

call them supporters, patrons, whatever you want

Nothing has the same thing at its core. so we invite those who want to share it with us

what you get ↓

• a vo
te, monthly, on what Nothing makes next
• a private room with the artists and the team
• early access to every drop

and
a few more things, including a limited piece for the first 100

👽
fund

30% of every sale on the Nothing marketplace goes into the fund

what the fund supports each month is up to the patrons

how it works ↓

artists listed on Nothing propose projects (listing happens through collaboration). patrons vote. the fund pays for the ones that win

possible directions ↓

• production of projects that wouldn't have happened otherwise

• media: interviews, articles, videos

• events: exhibitions, concerts, screenings

every production is visible at /fund. once the fund can cover the platform's operational cost, that shows up there too

👽
how the cycle works

1. artist makes the work

2. sale generates the fund

3. patrons decide where it goes

4. fund supports the next artist

5. visibility grows

Nothing: how to join

if you're a supporter

if you're an artist

Musica Subsonica

new media installation
by
Filip Borelli

░░░░░

in 2020, Filip Borelli woke up in the epicentre of the Zagreb earthquake. still half-asleep, he stepped outside and saw the waves moving through the ground

the vibrations were around 14 Hz – sound so low you feel it in your body instead of hearing it

that experience became Musica Subsonica

the installation translates a physical space into something you can see:

architectural space → sound → movement → light → picture

he turns the dimensions and materials of a room into a permanent trace. it's a way to give memory to places that get wiped out by wars, disasters, or time
