๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recognised Somaliland as an independent country, with Tel Aviv becoming the first state to acknowledge the independence of the Somali territory.

Netanyahu and FM Gideon Saโ€™ar held a video call with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, inviting him to visit Israel and calling it a โ€œgreat opportunity to expand their partnership.โ€ The recognition has sparked controversy, with Israeli officials arguing that the recognition could undermine Tel Avivโ€™s argument regarding a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu and FM Gideon Saโ€™ar held a video call with Somalilandโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ’ฌ @PoliticsGR Commentary:

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‡ช The Israeli recognition of Somaliland as an independent state is set to bring back to the table the issue of Somalia. I predict that a new conflict may resume in some months or years, as Saudi Arabia and Turkey are visibly angered by Tel Avivโ€™s decision.

Because Somalia has been a failed state since the 1990s, it has no ways to defend its sovereignty, which has led the autonomous region of Somaliland to function like an independent country for decades. The area has some significant cities (including its capital Hargeisa, the strategic port of Berbera and the urban centre of Burao), holds its own elections, has its own armed forces and maintains separate foreign affairs from the central government in Mogadishu.

With the latter being said, it is important to observe how aggressive foreign actors have sought to increase their regional power by counting on Hargeisa. The UAE has taken steps to redevelop the port and airport of Berbera and has established a military base on the latter to support its activities in Yemen. Abu Dhabi has also agreed to invest in corridors connecting Somaliland to the Ethiopian border, as Addis Ababa seeks access to the Red Sea and has a rivalry with Mogadishu over Somaliaโ€™s stance on the Ethiopian GERD construction. In the meantime, the ongoing war in Yemen and the advance of UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council forces at the expense of the Saudi-backed Yemeni government is set to embroil Riyadh into a more interventionist stance.

Taking all things into account, we can foresee the establishment of three alliances;

๐Ÿ”ธ On the one side, Israel and the UAE, countries with an expansionist foreign agenda, have joined hands with Ethiopia, which benefits from investments and the chaos prevailing in neighbouring Somalia. Somaliland, as a quasi-state, is also part of the alliance.

๐Ÿ”ธ On the other hand, we got Egypt, Somalia, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Somalia has voiced support for the water claims of Cairo, Turkey maintains bases in Mogadishu, while Riyadh remains a financial hotline for all allies. They also tend to support the Yemeni government in the neighbouring civil war.

๐Ÿ”ธ Lastly, Iran and its network of organisations in the Middle East constitute a different regional actor, although it is possible for Tehran to agree with the second bloc on some issues, particularly the Israeli role in the area and Yemeni unity.

โ—๏ธA final note regarding Greece; the recognition of Somaliland means nothing special for Athens, however it is important that Turkeyโ€™s special interests in Mogadishu are weakened by the decision.

In conclusion, the realities in Somalia and Yemen could result in the resurgence of new fronts and alliances. With Israel and the UAE resorting in asymmetric measures to embrace their goals, other countries are going to be more aggressive to prevent the Tel Aviv-Abu Dhabi duo from changing the face of the region.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ In a meeting in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the 20-point peace plan is 90% complete, and he views the meeting as an opportunity to ensure that everything is 100% ready.

On the other hand, Trump dismissed a question about security guarantees for Ukraine as โ€œstupid,โ€ but went on to say a strong security agreement would be reached with significant involvement from European countries. He also rejected the suggestion that Putin was not serious about peace.
