The "resolution to lift martial law" was submitted to the National Diet and passed with 190 votes out of 190 present. This means that the "state of emergency" has been lifted "legally," but we need to wait and see whether it will be lifted "practically."

Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the opposition party in the Republic of Korea, live-streamed himself scaling the walls of the National Assembly in order to bypass barricades and blocking forces set up by the Korean government.

Trying to start a coup with a 25% approval rating is pretty wild.

Democratic Party chairman Lee Jae-myung: "We are not leaving the Assembly Hall until the president declares the end of the martial law."

Lee: "The martial law was void ab initio, and the National Assembly confirmed it was invalid. I will remind the police and the military that following the illegal orders of the president is itself a crime. Please remain in your station and uphold your duties."

If the president doesn’t lift martial law, the Assembly can officially accuse him of wrongdoing (impeachment). Then, they vote on whether to remove him. If two-thirds of the Assembly agrees, he’s impeached.

It’s past 2am in Seoul. People aren’t leaving the National Assembly premise. They’re still outside. If anything, more have gathered. They are singing and waving flags in unison, doing chants that first started, “begone martial law!” which has changed to, “begone Yoon Suk Yeol!”
