* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Los Angeles, California — On August 12, 2023, at around 8:17 p.m., Olympic Area uniformed patrol officers responded to a radio call of a “Man with a Gun” inside the convenience store, located at the 3400 block of West 6th Street. Upon arrival the suspect, later identified as 35-year-old, Taylor Dean Sanders, had left the location. At around 9:19 p.m., officers who were canvassing the area, observed Sanders on the south sidewalk of Wilshire Boulevard west of Kenmore Avenue, carrying what appeared to be a black assault rifle. As officers issued verbal commands to Sanders, he raised the rifle in the direction of the officers resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). Officers broadcast a “Help Call,” as Sanders fled the location on foot.

Responding uniform officers from Rampart and Olympic Division observed Sanders walking south on Vermont Avenue from Wilshire Boulevard. Officers began to follow Sanders on foot from behind the cover of their trailing police vehicles. As Sanders reached mid-block between Vermont Avenue and 7th Street, officers deployed both Bean Bag Shotguns and 40mm Less-Lethal Launchers (LLL) towards Sanders. Sanders again raised his rifle in the direction of the officers, which resulted in a second OIS. Sanders continued to flee south on Vermont Avenue to a multi-unit shopping center and parking lot located at the northeast corner of 7th Street and Vermont Avenue. Officers again deployed 40mm LLL towards Sanders and as Sanders again pointed his rifle in the direction of officers resulting in a third OIS.

Sanders barricaded himself in an open-air stairwell of the parking lot and refused to submit to commands. Metropolitan Division Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) personnel responded to the location and after a lengthy standoff, Sanders surrendered without incident. Sanders was transported to California Hospital Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds. Sanders was admitted and listed in stable condition. Sanders was booked for Brandishing an Imitation Firearm at officers. Two replica firearms were located, a black air soft gun in the appearance of a rifle and a black and orange butane lighter in the appearance of a small pistol were recovered from the scene and booked as evidence. No officers or other citizens were injured during this incident. Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.

Youngstown, Ohio — On September 14, 2023, a male, later identified as 27-year-old Keishaun Sims entered the Youngstown Police Department lobby in emotional distress. The officer assigned to the auxiliary office, taking on station reports, initially attempted to engage with Sims, however the situation escalated. Sims became confrontational and a physical altercation took place involving both the officer and Sims. The encounter took a crucial turn when Sims assaulted the officer, and attempted to access the officer’s firearm. Other officers arrived and managed to handcuff Sims.

Sims was arrested and booked into Mahoning County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; two counts of assault on a police officer, a fourth-degree felony; and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and obstructing official business. He remains jailed after his bond was set at $100,000 during his arraignment in municipal court. The officer was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center to be examined but has since returned to duty. A statement from the police department said they are studying the encounter very closely and are mulling over whether to add more training to officers to learn how to de-escalate similar situations.

Bodycam Shows Mesa Police Officer Shooting Armed Robbery Suspect

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Mesa, Arizona — On August 3, 2023, Detectives from the Mesa Police Department and members of the U.S. Marshals Arizona Wanted Task Force, we're looking for 20-year-old Ny'Kendreon Pride, who was wanted in connection to three separate armed robberies. One that occurred on August 2nd and two more that occurred earlier that day. Pride was seen walking west across Mesa Drive from the apartment complex, at 1233 North Mesa Drive and continued south, on the sidewalk in front of another apartment complex, at 1230 North Mesa Drive. As Pride was walking, detectives contacted him from their vehicle. One detective who was riding in the rear passenger side, threw a flashbang near Pride, while another detective who was sitting in the front passenger side yelled for Pride to get down on the ground. The rear seat detective then fired two beanbag rounds, as the front seat detective fired rounds from his rifle.

The detective saw Pride reached for what he believed was a gun and that's when he fired his duty weapon. Pride collapsed as he attempted to run away with a handgun in his hand. Several commands were given for him to drop the weapon but he did not respond. Detectives used a taser, pepper ball rounds and beanbag rounds in an effort to get Pride to release the gun. He still did not respond. Detectives approached Pride, removed the handgun from his hand and took him into custody. The Mesa Fire Department responded and ultimately transported Pride to the Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. During the investigation, detectives identified the handgun Pride was carrying as a Glock and noted the trigger was depressed, but there was not a round in the chamber. The Glock had a Glock-Switch on the back, an extended magazine that contained 28 rounds. Detectives also found a large amount of cash in Pride's possession.

Man Gets Shot After Firing Gun at Two Deputies Following a Traffic Stop in Fort Collins, Colorado

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Fort Collins, Colorado — On July 12, 2022, at approximately 10:32 p.m., Deputy Jeffrey Kaley with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office (driving a marked patrol K9 vehicle) observed a silver Ford Escape speeding northbound on Timberline Road at Drake Road at what he estimated to be 90 MPH (in a 40 MPH zone). 23-year-old Bryan Erdbruegger was later identified as the driver and only occupant of the Ford Escape. Deputy Kaley attempted to contact the vehicle as it continued north on Timberline Road and then turned east onto Prospect Road. Deputy Kaley activated his emergency lights and Erdbruegger accelerated. Deputy Kaley aired that he was in pursuit of the vehicle traveling eastbound on Prospect Road at 70 MPH. Shortly after, Erdbruegger pulled over on Prospect Road, east of Specht Point Road. Deputy Kaley initiated a high-risk traffic stop, positioning himself behind his driver's side door, drew his service weapon, and began issuing verbal commands for Erdbruegger to stay in his car and show his hands.

Deputy Aaron Horwitz (in a marked patrol vehicle) responded to the location to provide cover. Bodycam footage shows that Erdbruegger opened his driver's side door, produced a handgun, and began to rapidly fire at Deputy Kaley. In response, Deputy Kaley returned fire. Deputy Horwitz, who arrived on scene just as Erdbruegger started shooting, also returned fire in response to Erdbruegger's shots. Evidence collected at the scene indicates that Erdbruegger was struck by the initial volley from the deputies, but the injuries sustained at this point did not stop his offensive. Erdbruegger reloaded his weapon, fired additional shots, and then advanced towards Deputy Kaley while still holding the gun. Deputy Kaley's firearm was out of ammunition, and he was unable to reload as Erdbruegger advanced. A physical struggle for Erdbruegger's firearm, later determined to be a Glock 43x, ensued between Deputy Kaley and Erdbruegger.

Deputy Kaley was able to push Erdbruegger back as Erdbruegger fired a single shot while still near Deputy Kaley. Erdbruegger initially retreated towards his vehicle and then turned back toward the deputies and began to raise his gun towards the deputies. Deputy Horwitz, having just reloaded his weapon, fired repeatedly, striking Erdbruegger and causing him to fall to the ground. Additional cover units arrived, and deputies rendered medical aid. Erdbruegger was transported to the hospital by ambulance. During transport, Erdbruegger spit at LCSO Deputy Cody Armstrong and continued to protest medical treatment. CIRT investigators recovered 17 casings (brass) fired by Erdbruegger and recovered 40 total casings (silver) fired by the deputies. At the hospital it was determined that Erdbruegger was struck four times (stomach, left thigh, neck, top of head) by shots fired by the deputies. Erdbruegger pleaded guilty to attempted murder, for which 8th Judicial District Court Judge Juan Villaseñor sentenced him to 34 years in prison during an August hearing.

Los Angeles Police Shoot Man Who Walked Towards Officers With a Large Kitchen Knife

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Los Angeles, California — On August 26, 2023, around 12:24 p.m., Northeast Division uniformed patrol officers responded to a radio call of a “Possible ADW suspect there now” at the 800 block of Nolden Street. The person reporting, later identified as 51-year-old Angel Garrido, advised Communications Division he was “Armed with a gun and going to hurt someone in the apartment.” While on the line with communications, Garrido refused to answer any questions and further stated, he was “going to hurt whoever showed up to the location.” When the officers arrived, they walked into the entrance of the two-story apartment building, which took them to a narrow stairway leading up to the second floor.

The officers walked up the stairway to the second floor and as they neared the top, they announced their presence. Garrido appeared in the hallway and walked towards the officers while holding a large kitchen knife in his right hand. The knife was held with the blade pointed down and towards the officers. The officers immediately verbalized with Garrido, ordering him to drop the knife, but he refused to comply. Garrido continued advancing toward the officers and an OIS occurred. Garrido was struck by gunfire, fell to the ground and was taken into custody without further incident. The Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported Garrido by rescue ambulance to a local hospital where he was admitted and is in stable condition. No officers or other citizens were injured as a result of this incident.

Suspect Gets Shot After Shootout With Dallas Police Officers

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Dallas, Texas — On September 24, 2023, at about 12:30 a.m., covert officers from Northeast Patrol saw a stolen vehicle traveling westbound on Garland Road near Peavy Road. The car had a paper tag that did not belong to the vehicle. The preliminary investigation determined officers followed the vehicle to the 1800 block of El Capitan. The covert officers then requested uniform officers to respond to the scene. When the uniform officers arrived, they saw the suspect, 55-year-old Michael Shirley outside of the stolen vehicle. Officers gave verbal commands for Shirley to stop and show his hands. Shirley pulled out a handgun and shot at the officers.

Officers returned fire at the suspect. Shirley got into the stolen vehicle and sped away Northbound on El Capitan into a nearby apartment complex and came out eastbound on Barnes Ridge, after cutting through the apartment complex. The suspect then hit a curb in the 2000 block of Barnes Bridge, flipping the car. Covert officers saw the suspect crash and approach the vehicle. The officers were wearing their heavy vest with police markings and deployed their patrol rifles when the suspect again fired at officers. Officers took cover behind a vehicle and returned fire again, hitting the suspect.

The suspect was taken into custody and officers attempted first aid, but Shirley died at the scene. Shirley's gun was recovered at the scene. Officers also found a woman handcuffed in the backseat, she was not injured in the crash and is not considered a suspect. The woman said she got into suspect's vehicle voluntarily and as they drove around the suspect pulled her into the second row of the vehicle and handcuffed her to the seatbelt. Shirley has an extensive criminal history, including spending 8 years in prison for indecency with a child. Shirley had active warrants out for his arrest at the time of the chase and shooting.

Suspect Shot by Deputies After Crime Spree Ends With Car Chase and Gunfire

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *
Stanislaus County, California — On Friday, September 22nd 2023, at 3:45 p.m., deputies investigated a home burglary in the 3500 block of West Keyes Road in Keyes, where a handgun was stolen. At 5:31 p.m., a citizen in the 5100 block of Muncy Road in Modesto reported being carjacked at gunpoint by a male adult, later determined to be 43-year-old Jason Dingler, who stole the man’s pickup truck. 6 minutes after the carjacking, at 5:37 p.m., an employee of the One Stop Market in the city Grayson reported a male with a gun stole from the store. The man was described the same as the one from the carjacking minutes earlier. He was also later identified as Dingler. A California Highway Patrol officer located the stolen truck traveling south on Highway 33 at 5:44 p.m. After multiple deputies arrived to assist with stopping the vehicle being driven by Dingler, he failed to pull over, leading them on a pursuit. With Air101, the Sheriff’s Office helicopter, overhead, Dingler continued fleeing from deputies on Highway 33, reaching speeds up to 95 MPH.

During the pursuit, at 5:59 p.m., Dingler sideswiped another car as he passed it, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and crash at the edge of an orchard. He exited the truck and fled on foot into the same orchard, where he shot at deputies multiple times. Air101 provided updates to deputies on the ground as Dingler moved through the orchard, including laying on the ground, shooting at deputies again and striking a patrol car. For the next several minutes, he could be seen with a gun in his hand and began moving closer to where the deputies were. At 6:26 p.m., Dingler was approaching deputies, at which time two discharged their firearms at least one time each. Dingler was struck by at least one bullet and fell to the ground. Deputies gave him multiple commands, but he was uncooperative and still had a gun within his reach. As additional safety equipment arrived at the scene, including armored vehicles, deputies were able to approach Dingler and take him into custody at 6:47 p.m. They immediately began providing him medical treatment until he could be transported to a hospital by a nearby waiting ambulance. He survived his gunshot wound(s) and is in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The firearm used by Dingler to shoot at deputies was recovered from the orchard. It is the same as the handgun stolen in the earlier burglary and believed to be the same used in the carjacking and robbery at the market. The Major Crimes Unit, Stanislaus County District Attorney Office, and administrative investigators responded to the scene. It is standard for both criminal and administrative investigations to be conducted at the same time when an officer-involved shooting occurs. No deputies or other assisting law enforcement were injured in the incident. The driver of the sideswiped vehicle complained of pain from the accident but declined to be treated at the time. As related to each incident listed, 43-year-old Dingler is arrested for the following crimes: Residential Burglary: Burglary Carjacking: Carjacking, Kidnapping, Burglary, Assault with a Deadly Weapon Robbery: Robbery, Brandishing a Firearm Pursuit: Evading a Peace Officer, Hit and Run, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle Attempted Murder: Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Prohibited Person in Possession of Ammunition, Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Attempted Murder.
