Total eclipse 𑇐 April 8, 2024
Did you know even Earth’s smallest life forms can be impacted during an eclipse?¹

¹ During a solar eclipse, the moon crosses between Earth and the sun, temporarily obstructing the sun’s light. This drives short-term changes in the environment like reduced light levels and a drop in temperature. These changes could influence microbial growth and activity.

Microbes are highly adaptable and responsive to their environment, even slight changes in conditions can impact their metabolic rates and growth patterns. In one small study, researchers observed that the bacteria growing in a lab in India during a 2010 solar eclipse exhibited a significant change in size and shape characteristics near the eclipse peak. These findings have yet to be confirmed through replication, so more research is needed to untangle the details of how eclipses alter bacteria. (Earth by ASM Channels)

¹ Casey C. Mannes (@cooperlost) captured this image while in the Amazon rainforest. She recalls that learning about the jaguar in the image: “This jaguar was saved from the illegal wildlife trade. His mother was killed by poachers and he was meant to be sold but was luckily intercepted where he’s being rehabilitated. He will eventually be free again to roam where he belongs–in the jungle. His eyes tell a story. I was grateful to be able to see him roaming in his natural habitat.” (Earth by ASM Channels)
