I'm back with yet another early first look at an upcoming Android 15 feature: audio sharing.

Audio sharing utilizes Auracast, a feature of the Bluetooth LE Audio standard, to stream audio from your phone to two or more nearby devices!

Full details are available in my hands-on article for Android Authority.

Google has just published the I/O 2024 schedule!

Though I think I've done an amazing job at documenting Android 15 this year, Google always seems to pull an announcement or two out of their hat that surprises me.

Looking forward to finding out what that is! I've heard some stuff about Wear OS 5 and future Android TV versions that I'm not super confident about reporting yet, so I've held off for now. I hope this information gets confirmed at I/O, though!

Android 15 Will Force Dark Mode On Every App
Source

With Android 10, Google introduced support for a system-wide dark mode toggle with the "Override Force-Dark" option which is available in Developer Settings

The feature works by analyzing “each view of your light-themed app and applies a dark theme automatically before it is drawn to the screen.”

However, apps “must opt-in to Force Dark,” indicating they can opt out of it as well.

Now in the January Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 update, Google hid a new “make all apps dark” toggle under Settings > Accessibility > Color and Motion.

This toggle, which wasn’t visible by default then (and still isn’t as of the latest Android 15 Beta 1.2) is similar to the 'override force-dark' option.

But, the “make all apps dark” works in more apps than “override force-dark”, suggesting that the existing developer opt-out no longer works and that the underlying force-dark algorithm is different.

Google will introduce it with Android 15 release

Android 15's new notification cooldown feature can not only lower the volume when you get successive notifications from the same app, but it'll soon also stop those same notifications from vibrating your phone like crazy!

More details are available in my latest article on Android Authority.

YouTube Will Start Showing Ads on Smart TVs When You Pause a Video

YouTube discussed its pause ads last year when it said it would bring them to connected TVs.
When a video is paused on a smart television, the video shrinks and an ad shows next to it.

Google’s results showed growing revenues in its YouTube ads more generally, with an increase of 21% year-on-year.

Google says its experiment with “pause ads” on YouTube has yielded some very positive results.

YouTube's pause ads are "driving strong brand lift results" and "commanding premium pricing from advertisers."

YouTube tried to spin the new pause ad format as "seamless" and a way for brands to engage viewers in a "non-interruptive" way when they get up for snacks or bathroom breaks.

So since Google is feeling pretty positive about pause ads on YouTube, the company may roll them out more widely once it’s done gathering data from its ongoing experiment.

Google Phone starts rolling out ‘Audio Emoji’

The list of "Audio Emoji" includes:
• Clapping 👏
• Laughing 😂
• Party 🎉
• Crying 😢
• Poop 💩
• Sting 🥁

When you, as the caller, select one of these "Audio Emoji," the Google Phone app will play a fun animation while a sound effect plays for a couple of seconds. The sound effect is heard on both ends of the phone call. There's a "cooldown" in between that prevents you from playing sounds back to back.

There’s a button to access it in the overflow menu, but there’s also a chip that appears in the main calling interface.

Audio Emoji is rolling out via the latest Google Phone update in the beta channel, version 128. It will likely launch for all users in the weeks to come.

Last month, Google confirmed to me that the Pixel 8 & 8 Pro can be located on the Find My Device network even if they're powered off or have run out of battery!

Today, I checked if the new Pixel 8a will also support this, and I found evidence it will! You can read more about this feature in my latest article for Android Authority.

Gemini Nano with Multimodality just got announced! This new, 3.8B parameter is designed to run on-device and can process not just text input but also audio and images. It’s coming later this year “starting with Pixel” and will be used for:

- Clearer descriptions with TalkBack. TalkBack will soon be able to automatically generate more useful image descriptions. This will help people with visual impairments who can’t see images, especially when those images don’t have alt text already.

- Scam detection. A new feature that processes voice calls to detect and warn you when the person on the other end is trying to scam you. The feature will look for conversation patterns commonly associated with scams, like when a “bank representative” asks you to urgently transfer funds. If so, your phone will buzz and show a warning. This feature will be opt-in and audio is processed on-device by Gemini Nano with Multimodality, meaning your voice calls don’t leave the device.

Gemini for Android is getting upgraded with new contextual capabilities!

- A new “ask this video” chip will appear if you invoke Gemini while a YouTube video is open. Gemini will then use the YouTube video as context.
- A new “ask this PDF” chip will appear when you’re viewing a PDF file in supported apps. Tapping this will let you ask questions about/summarize the document. This requires Gemini Advanced, though, because of its longer context window.
- You’ll be able to drag and drop generated images directly into Gmail, Messages, and other supported apps.
- Finally, devices with the next-gen multimodal Gemini Nano will surface dynamic suggestions. The way this works is that a screenshot of the screen is fed to Gemini Nano, which can then generate chips of potential things you might want to ask about.
