First look at Google Pixel 8a's renders

OnLeaks with SmartPrix have leaked another Pixel, this time the Pixel 8a which is a tad smaller, narrower and thinner than the 7a at 152.1 x 72.6 x 8.9mm (while the Pixel 7a is 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0mm)

The display is 6.1 inches with a center placed hole punch with thin, curved bezels and just like the Pixel 8, the design is more rounded. On the rear you have the signature Pixel camera visor with two cameras.

As other Pixels, the buttons, charging port and speaker are in their usual places, but what's surprising is that next to the speaker, there's a Ultra Wideband antenna on the top. You'll also find the SIM card slot on the left side.

Akita, the codename of the 8a features the Tensor G3 SoC and Mali-G715 GPU with 8GB of RAM and will launch with Android 14.

Google Camera 9.1 adds a "rich color in photos" toggle that lets you capture images using the Display P3 color format instead of sRGB. This setting is enabled by default on the Pixel 8 series.

Display P3 wide gamut capture is a new capability of Android 14. Devices can capture wide gamut color images in JPEG format without using 10-bit HDR.

(This screenshot was from my Pixel 6 Pro, where the setting was disabled by default.)

The Pixel 8 is the first phone to capture photos in Ultra HDR, a new format that I think could be the future of mobile photography!

Ultra HDR is something you really need to see to understand, though, so I worked with Dylan Raga to put together a demo that shows it off. The results are STUNNING!

If you're using a Chromium-based browser on a PC running Windows 11/macOS with an HDR display or on a Pixel 7 running Android 14, then you can see these Ultra HDR samples in their full glory by going to the GitHub repo linked in my latest article for Android Police.

On Wednesday, you're going to see a lot of reviews of the Pixel 8 series go up. Unfortunately, since platform support for Ultra HDR is so limited, many of those reviews will be unable to showcase the photos taken from the phone in their full glory.

Most social media sites and CMSes compress images, which will result in the HDR gain map being removed from the Ultra HDR .jpg. Even Windows File Explorer corrupts the metadata when you simply edit the EXIF tags!

Oh, and the photos I took were all from a Pixel 6 Pro using Google Camera 9.1 (pulled from a Pixel 8). This means that yes, certain older Pixels are able to capture in Ultra HDR as well.

Here's a demo of the new Magic Editor feature, but on a Pixel 7 Pro πŸ‘€

I had to back up this photo before I could use Magic Editor on it, so most of the processing is likely done on the cloud.

Also, you have to agree to Google's generative AI ToS to use this feature.

I got this feature after sideloading the latest version of Google Photos onto my Pixel 7 Pro, and also spoofing some props.

(Ignore the fact that the device frame is a Pixel 8 Pro. I don't have the phone, I just use that frame because it looks good.)

Here's a look at some of the other capabilities of the new Magic Editor feature:

* Change image styling
* Enhance portraits
* Change the sky
* Change the water

New features coming to the Google Recorder app:

* The ability to add certain recordings to a "Favorites" list

* A new "audio channels" setting that lets you change between mono and stereo

(The new AI summarization feature is not available yet.)

First look at Google Assistant with Bard integration

Developer AssembleDebug has found some information about the Bard integration in Google Assistant. Sadly, the feature is not working, but we know some things that Assistant can do with Bard:
β€’ Write/draft/create an email
β€’ Create and export a Google Docs document
β€’ Add an image to your prompt and view the context on your display

Like Bard Web, you'll be able to tweak the answers to be shorter, longer, more casual/professional, simpler and you can use Bard Extensions for YouTube, Gmail, Docs, Drive, Maps, Flights, Hotels integration.

When Assistant w/ Bard is enabled, you will no longer see the original Assistant (is Google trying to replace Assistant with the Bard powered one?)

Google Calendar is now on Wear OS 3+ watches

As announced on the Made by Google event, the Google Calendar is now arriving on Wear OS 3 and newer watches.

The app shows your schedule, which you can open individual events to preview the date, time, location, notes, notifications, what calendar it's saved to and more. From that menu, you can open the event on your phone or delete it right on your wrist.

Besides that, there's Google Tasks integration, which lets you mark tasks as done, two Wear OS tiles for your next event and next tasks and a complication to show your next event on your watch face.

Some tidbits from Google's AMA on Reddit about Android 14:

β€”-

In Google's Ask Me Anything (AMA) about Android 14 on Reddit, someone asked about the status of satellite SOS/SMS.

In response, Google said they're "working on it! In fact you can see the new telephony satellite interface in Android 14 source code. More to come on the Satellite eSOS feature soon."

β€”-

The Pixel 8 series will add support for lossless USB audio in a future later release, according to Dave Burke in response to a comment from a Redditor.

Android 14 added support for lossless audio formats over USB wired headsets.

β€”-

Dave Burke has shared more details about the new optimizations in ART 14, the major new version of the Android Runtime that's available in Android 14 (and will likely be backported to Android 12+ devices via a Project Mainline update).

For context, Google earlier said ART 14 "includes optimizations that reduce code size by an average of 9.3% without impacting performance." The smaller the files containing the code that ART has to interpret, the better it is for memory and storage.

According to Burke, these ART optimizations include "dead code elimination, collapse return statements, etc. An average phone can have 500MB-1GB of optimized code so this translates to a 50-100MB savings!"
