My monitor says the server is up but the app is broken — why?

Q: My check shows green, port 443 responds, but the actual app returns errors to users. What's the disconnect?

A: Shallow checks are the trap. A reader monitored only TCP port 443 — was the port accepting connections? It always was, even when the app behind it was returning HTTP 500 to every request. During one incident the app threw errors for 52 minutes while the monitor sat green the whole time.

They deepened the check in stages: from TCP, to an HTTP 200 check, to finally asserting a specific string in the response body ('"status":"ok"' from a health endpoint that pings the database). The next time the DB connection pool exhausted, the body check failed in under a minute.

The follow-up: don't go overboard and check 20 things in one probe — when it fails you won't know which. Use one deep check that proves the critical path works end to end, and keep it readable.

I monitor from one US location — is that enough for a global audience?

Q: My site serves users worldwide but I check from a single US East node. Am I missing problems?

A: A media site with heavy APAC traffic learned this the hard way. Their single US probe showed 99.97% uptime for a quarter. But their real-user data showed Singapore and Sydney visitors hitting 8–12 second load times during peak, sometimes timing out entirely — a CDN edge in the region was misconfigured and falling back to the US origin.

They added probes in Singapore, Sydney, and Frankfurt. The regional probes immediately exposed the issue, showing 14% failed checks from APAC versus 0.03% from the US node. Fixing the edge config cut APAC median load time from 9.1s to 1.4s.

The follow-up: put a probe where your users actually are, not just where your servers are. One reader keeps a simple rule — a monitoring region for every market that's more than 10% of traffic.

An alert fired at 3am and nobody saw it for two hours. How do I prevent that?

Q: Our on-call person slept through a page and the outage ran for hours. We need a safety net. What do teams actually do?

A: A reader's post-incident review found the gap: a single notification to one phone, no follow-up if unacknowledged. That one missed page turned a fixable 10-minute issue into a 2-hour 15-minute outage.

They built a tiered escalation: alert the primary on-call, then if not acknowledged within 5 minutes, escalate to the secondary, then after 10 more minutes, page the team lead. They also switched the critical path from email to a phone call plus push.

Result over the next six months: median acknowledge time fell to 3 minutes, and no incident ran past 25 minutes from detection. The longest gap was one 12-minute escalation to the secondary — which is exactly the system working.

The follow-up: test the escalation quarterly with a fake alert. Untested escalation paths fail silently right when you need them.
