Itโ€™s that time of the year again, for the most special of retrospectionsโ€ฆ year-in-review lists. ๐Ÿ‘ค e-Commerce App vs Web Engagement

Using the top four e-commerce brands, here Verto dives into what form of traffic was driving the majority of their visits. Unsurprisingly, Web (including mobile & desktop) continues to dominate e-commerce reach and time spent. 179 million unique monthly visitors access #Amazon at least once via Web which is 97% of Amazonโ€™s user base for September 2018; only 53% of those users, 98 million, access it via the application. Even in terms of engagement, the average user on Amazon spent slightly more than 5 hours on web browsers compared to slightly under an hour on the app.

๐Ÿ“Š Facebook's User Growth Stalls Where It Hurts

Considering its size, itโ€™s not a surprise that #Facebookโ€™s user growth has been slowing down recently. After all, the social network has more than 2.3 billion (!) monthly active users while the International Telecommunications Union puts the number of global internet users at around 3.9 billion.

What hurts the company though, is the fact that the regions most affected by the slowdown are the ones where Facebook generates the lionโ€™s share of its revenue. Over the past three months, the social network has added just 2 million users in North America & 5 million users across Europe, which is where it generated 50% & 25% of its total revenue in the past quarter, respectively.

๐Ÿ“บ The Social Side of TVideo Viewing

As internet-connected devices proliferate and streaming services grow in popularity, itโ€™s easy to assume that TV viewing has become an individual pastime. But the reality is that just about half (48%) of #TV or video total viewing time in the ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is still done in groups โ€“ and this may even be growing as a social activity.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Microsoft's Share Price Tripled Under Satya Nadella

Five years ago, Satya Nadella took over as CEO at #Microsoft, following in the footsteps of Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. It wasnโ€™t an easy situation to come in for Nadella, considering that Microsoft had missed the transition to mobile devices, Windows 8 had flopped miserably and the PC market had started its decline, putting Microsoftโ€™s core business, Windows, into question.

Back in 2014, most people given the choice to invest $1,000 in either Microsoft or #Apple, probably would have invested in the latter, considering the huge success that Microsoftโ€™s old foe was having with its mobile devices, most importantly the iPhone. And yet, here we are, five years into Nadellaโ€™s tenure and Microsoft is not only the most valuable public company on the planet, it has also outperformed Apple over the past five years.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“บ Competing for Consumer Attention

The pressure on linear TV isnโ€™t just coming from streaming services such as #Netflix and #Hulu. Both are part of a wider competition for the consumerโ€™s free time with other media formats.

Consumers are now clocking up an average of around 2:20 hours per day on #SocialMedia, rising to around 3 hours among 16-24s. Online and print press, games consoles, music streaming and broadcast radio collectively constitute around 5 hours of a consumerโ€™s day. Thatโ€™s not including the hour and a quarter spent watching online #TV, and the 6 ยพ hours spent online more broadly on a daily basis.

Consumer attention in this crowded environment has become harder to maintain.

Linear TV, does however, have a lot to boast about here. With the exception of social media, linear TV captures the largest share of daily media time among consumers, standing at 18%, significantly above online TVโ€™s 12%. And considering social media engagement happens frequently throughout the day whereas TV engagement is mostly in long durations, thatโ€™s an impressive feat.
