😰🇺🇸 CIA’s Operation Midnight Climax: Sex, LSD, and the dark side of Cold War mind control

The CIA launched one of its most unethical experiments — Operation Midnight Climax, a subproject of the infamous MKUltra program — amid fears of Soviet brainwashing techniques in the 1950s and 1960s.

Directed by CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb and run by narcotics agent George Hunter White, the operation set up fake brothels (safehouses) in San Francisco, Marin County, and New York City.

Prostitutes on the CIA payroll lured unsuspecting men into lavish apartments decorated with red curtains and Toulouse-Lautrec prints.

There, the men were secretly dosed with LSD in their drinks and then observed through two-way mirrors as they engaged in sexual activity—often while agents like White watched from behind the glass, drinking martinis.

▪️ To test whether LSD combined with sex could break down inhibitions, extract secrets, or enable mind control and sexual blackmail in espionage.

▪️ In reality, the program produced little useful intelligence and devolved into years of taxpayer-funded debauchery with minimal oversight.

▪️ The operation ran from around 1954 until the San Francisco sites closed in 1965 and the New York site in 1966, following internal criticism and ethical concerns.

▪️ Most records were destroyed in 1973, but declassified documents and investigations—including the 1975 Rockefeller Commission—later exposed the scandal.
