Prime and perfect: The hidden math behind 2026
Bengaluru: City-based KV Narayana, a retired professor with a PhD in number theory, dissected a few mathematical properties of New Year 2026.
Year 2026 is a non-leap year with 365 days; it both begins and ends on a Thursday, Narayana said. The calendar of the year 2026 is the same as the calendar of year 2015 and of the year 2037.
The last digit of the number 2026 is 6, where 6 is a perfect number — the one that is equal to the sum of all its positive divisors excluding itself. That is, 6 = 1 + 2 + 3. Quoting Greek philosopher Saint Augustine, he said God took 6 days to create the world. According to Narayana, creation of the world is perfect because the number 6 is considered a perfect number in mathematics, and it symbolises perfection and completeness in the Biblical context.
The number 2026 is a product of 2 prime numbers: 2 x 1013 = 2026. The number 2026 is also the sum of 2 prime numbers: 23 + 2003 = 2026.
Consider the sequence of numbers: 1, 10, 19, 28, ………. 2026. The sequence is an Arithmetic Progression (AP) with first term 1 and common difference 9. The last term of the above sequence is 2026, which is the 226th term. The digit pattern in 226 is the same as the pattern of the non-zero digits of 2026. This is a strong property linking the digits of 226 and 2026.
