इस बैंक की स्थापना बायोफोर्टिफाइड फसल किस्मों में असन्तुलन को दूर करने के लिए की गई है इस बैंक में लगभग 10 लाख जर्म प्लाज्मा को संरक्षित रखा जा सकता है फिलहाल 4.5 लाख जर्म प्लाज्मा संरक्षित हैं, जिनमें 2.7 लाख घरेलू प्रजातियों के हैं बाकी दूसरे देशों से प्राप्त किए गए हैं.
