On this day in 1936 the Oor Wullie comic strip appeared for the first time in the Sunday Post newspaper.
Created by Thomson editor R. D. Low and drawn by cartoonist Dudley D. Watkins. Watkins continued to draw Oor Wullie until his death in 1969, after which the Post recycled his work into the 1970s. New strips were eventually commissioned from Tom Lavery, followed by Peter Davidson and Robert Nixon. Ken H. Harrison drew the strip from 1989 until 1997, when Davidson resumed duties. Between January 2005 and 2006 storylines were written by broadcaster Tom Morton from his home in Shetland, and subsequently they were written by Dave Donaldson, managing director of Thomson's comics division. The current writer is former Dandy editor Morris Heggie.
Between 2016 and 2017, artist Diego Jourdan Pereira filled in for Peter Davidson on Wullie, The Broons and Wee Harry. Jourdan Pereira also provided illustrations for the 2017 Annual and official merchandising.

In some areas of Scotland low earners are having to pay out half of their income on rent and even middle earners are having to pay a third. The situation is being made worse by rental agents for private rental properties allegedly asking people to bid higher than the advertised rents to secure accommodation.
This is a situation that cannot be allowed to carry on. It is leaving working people in working poverty and making their lives just a grind to get by with a basic level of existence.
The situation is being made far worse by social housing construction being at an all-time low and housing being handed to incomers while Scots sit on housing lists for years.
The SNP are failing the people of Scotland yet again by not controlling rents, by not investing in high levels of new social housing and by having a policy of importing people to our nation who are either handed social housing or put into private rental accommodation, putting upward pressure on rents.

On this day in 1566 David Rizzo, the Italian Private secretary of Mary ,Queen of Scots was murdered at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh .
David Rizzio was an Italian courtier, born close to Turin, a descendant of an ancient and noble family still living in Piedmont, the Riccio Counts di San Paolo e Solbrito, who rose to become the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary's husband, Lord Darnley, is said to have been jealous of their friendship because of rumours that Rizzio had impregnated Mary, and he joined in a conspiracy of Protestant nobles to murder him, led by Patrick Ruthven, 3rd Lord Ruthven. Mary was having dinner with Rizzio and a few ladies-in-waiting when Darnley joined them, accused his wife of adultery and then had a group murder Rizzio, who was hiding behind Mary. Mary was held at gunpoint and Rizzio was stabbed numerous times. His body took 57 dagger wounds. The murder was the catalyst of the downfall of Darnley, and had serious consequences for Mary's subsequent reign.

Scots farmers are seeing their costs surge by over 200%, with the price of feed, fuel, fertiliser and other commodities rising rapidly.
This is sure to bring more pain to Scots consumers. Again, part of the blame must be laid at the feet of the UK and Scots governments. They have failed to exploit the energy resources that we have on our doorstep and have rejected the nuclear power option all in a rush to go green. We have been left reliant on Imports of energy and fuel. One of the main priorities of any government should be to achieve fuel security for its nation.
We have also over the years become reliant on food imports, now having the crazy situation where we actually pay farmers not to put good farming land into use producing food for our people. Food security should be another issue high on any government's agenda, making sure we are as self-sufficient as possible in food supplies. But successive governments have failed to do this.

Argyle and Bute Council have been criticised after pictures were published showing skips full of Gaelic educational resources ready to be dumped.
It is an unacceptable situation both in terms of waste of money and misuse of resources meant for teaching the Gaelic language in Scotland.
For years the Gaelic language has been in decline in Scotland, in part due to bans on its use starting in 1606 and further suppression after the 1745 rising.
We should be doing everything that we can to increase the use and teaching of Gaelic. If these resources could not be used in this area they should have been redeployed to areas where they are needed rather than dumped.
It is vital that we do everything we can to reinvigorate Scottish traditions and culture.

On this day in 520 Saint Kessog, who was considered Scotland's first Patron Saint until Saint Andrew took over, was killed at Bandry.
Saint Kessog was an Irish missionary of the mid-sixth century active in the Lennox area and southern Perthshire. Son of the king of Cashel in Ireland, Kessog is said to have worked miracles, even as a child. He left Ireland and became a missionary bishop in Scotland. Using Monks' Island in Loch Lomond as his headquarters, he evangelized the surrounding area until he was martyred, supposedly at Bandry, where a heap of stones was known as St Kessog's cairn.
The St Kessog's church in Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond is named after Kessog and the church contains an effigy of the saint. Kessog is claimed to have brought Christianity to the area around Luss in 510 AD and 1500 years of continuous Christian presence in the area was celebrated in 2010.

The SNP have been chronically underfunding local councils for years and the situation is becoming unsustainable.
An investigation found that between 2013/14 and 2020/21 Council funding has dropped by 4.2% in real terms, once Covid cash was excluded.
An increasing amount of money from central government to the councils has also been ringfenced to meet what the Scottish government sees as priorities. This has led to cuts in services, cuts that have seen one in eight libraries in Scotland close, and rises in council taxes.
The way the government allocates money means that the councils face uncertainty and stark choices over what they can and cannot fund. The people of Scotland are the ones that suffer due to this mismanagement and cuts and it needs to change. Things like increasing child poverty and homelessness cannot be tackled while the SNP continue to underfund councils. The SNP are failing the people of Scotland at every turn and they need to go.

Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth Hospital has been hit with one scandal after another since its opening 7 years ago.
It has suffered from fungus in its walls that is a danger to health, and outbreaks of infections linked to its water supply that killed at least two children, amongst other issues.
Now it has been found that the £850 million building has problems with fire retardant sheeting on cavity insulation that could lead to fire spreading rapidly through the building if it were to break out.
The QE hospital has been a catalogue of failures for NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government, though both continue to claim that the building is safe.
The amount of money that has been wasted and the threat to people's lives is staggering but no one will take responsibility or has been sanctioned over these failures.
It is just another example of how the public sector in Scotland needs a complete overhaul and the SNP government brought to account for their ongoing failures.

PA Scotland has got The National worried again... every smear and lie they post, gives us more publicity and helps our numbers grow. Folk can see through their fear-mongering.
It was nice to see them share a full colour pic of our White Minority by 2066 leaflet.

On this day in 1911 Sir Fitzroy McLean was born. McLean was supposed to be one of the people Ian Fleming modelled James Bond on.
Major-General Sir Fitzroy Hew Royle Maclean, 1st Baronet, KT, CBE was a Scottish soldier, writer and politician. He was a Unionist Member of Parliament (MP) from 1941 to 1974 and was one of only two men who during the Second World War enlisted in the British Army as a private and rose to the rank of brigadier, the other being future fellow Conservative MP Enoch Powell.
Maclean wrote several books, including Eastern Approaches, in which he recounted three extraordinary series of adventures: travelling, often incognito, in Soviet Central Asia; fighting in the Western Desert campaign, where he specialised in commando raids behind enemy lines; and living rough with Josip Broz Tito and his Yugoslav Partisans while commanding the Maclean Mission there.

It appears that a Turkish shipyard has won the contract worth £105 million to build two ferries to service Islay.
While these ferries are a welcome addition to an aging and ailing fleet of ferries that have struggled to service the island, it is unbelievable that the SNP should give the contract to a foreign yard.
The SNP have totally mismanaged the ferry situation in Scotland. They have wasted tens of millions on overruns, badly designed ferries with multiple changes, and the purchase of Ferguson Marine that has been a disaster and a financial black hole.
The SNP should be looking to build a well run and sustainable marine business in Scotland, as we were once the world leader in shipbuilding.
More failure for the SNP/Green alliance and a betrayal of Scottish shipyard workers and marine businesses.

On this day in 1820 Sir Alexander Mackenzie died near Dunkeld in Perthshire.
Sir Alexander Mackenzie, was a Scottish explorer known for accomplishing the first east to west crossing of America north of Mexico in 1793, which preceded the Lewis and Clark Expedition by 12 years. The Mackenzie River is named after him. The site where he finished his crossing is now Sir Alexander Mackenzie Provincial Park and is designated a First Crossing of North America National Historic Site. In 2016, Mackenzie was named a National Historic Person.

Scotland is facing yet another crisis, this time in postal services. There has been a rash of closures over the last decade and recently SPAR announced that they would be closing 31 Post Office counters within their stores.
The closure of these counters disproportionately affects rural and poorer areas in Scotland. The SNP have done nothing so far to tackle this problem. The privatisation of the Post Office has led to this situation, where profit is put before service to the community.
Many of the most vulnerable in our society count on the Post Office for access to cash and other services. Without them, their already difficult lives will become more so.
The Post Office counter service should be seen as a community service and possibly run by the community, not just for profit. The SNP need to act to stop these closures or find a way forward to keep these Post Offices open in our communities.
