Sturgeon and her SNP/Green alliance seem determined to shut down the fossil fuel industry, even though just now is probably the worst time to push forward with this, with oil at a ten-year high and natural gas having jumped massively in the last few months and no respite from these rises in sight.

The SNP seem to have no effective plan to replace these, with their renewable energy drive appearing to be a failure when it comes to producing enough power and keeping prices down. Their opposition to nuclear power has not helped this situation.

They also seem to not care about the 10,000s of jobs in the oil industry and allied industries that would be lost. Years ago they predicted a green jobs bonanza for Scotland but there are no signs of this.

Now is not the time to rapidly move forward with this charge to shut down the oil and gas industry in Scotland. Such a move can only inflict more pain on a people already suffering with rising inflation, taxes and fuel costs.
On this day in 1847 Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh.

Bell was a Scottish-born inventor, scientist, and engineer who is credited with patenting the first practical telephone. He also co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885.

Bell's father, grandfather, and brother had all been associated with work on elocution and speech and both his mother and wife were deaf; profoundly influencing Bell's life's work. His research on hearing and speech further led him to experiment with hearing devices which eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first U.S. patent for the telephone, on March 7, 1876. Bell considered his invention an intrusion on his real work as a scientist and refused to have a telephone in his study.

Many other inventions marked Bell's later life, including groundbreaking work in optical telecommunications, hydrofoils, and aeronautics.

On this day in 1756, Sir Henry Raeburn, one of Scotland's most well known painters, was born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh.

Originally apprenticed to a goldsmith, Henry Raeburn showed enormous artistic talent as a young man. In 1784 he moved to London where he met the important portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. He spent some time in Italy but returned to Edinburgh in 1787 where he began painting portraits of the rich, famous and important people of his day. He was in constant demand and received many honours: in 1822 he was knighted when the King visited Edinburgh. Sir Henry Raeburn died a year later.

On this day in 1457 King James II banned golf and football in Scotland.

James I had already banned the playing of football in 1424 when the playing of it was punished by a fine of 4 pence.

Football continued to grow though and that is why James II brought in new legislation against football but also for the first time golf. The reason behind the ban was that military training was compulsory for all male Scots but it was felt that too much time was being spent playing ball games and not enough on martial skills.

The new legislation brought in a fine of upto 40 shillings. It appears from records that fines were actually collected. Various trade groups also banned their apprentices from indulging in the games.
A special unit has been set up within the Crown Office to investigate over 4000 deaths that resulted from Covid.

The unit will look at whether company and care home bosses should face corporate manslaughter charges over failures that led to deaths within their facilities.

All well and good, but if care home bosses are going to be investigated and face serious charges so should Sturgeon and the SNP. It was their actions in forcing untested patients out of hospitals and into care homes that led to the spread of the virus between those facilties. This, along with other failures of the SNP government during the Covid crisis, must be investigated and any politicians found to be complicit in the decisions (or lack of them) should face justice as well.

Will the politicians of our nation escape scrutiny and justice over their actions? Surely this is not right and they too should have their day in court.
This weekend, Patriotic Alternative held our spring conference at a lovely venue in the south of England.

Six fantastic speakers addressed a sold out venue and our activists and supporters enjoyed a day of networking, followed by an evening meal. We were made to feel very welcome during our stay and the event took place without any issues.

Thank you to everybody who came. The speeches will be posted this week.

On this day in 1744 the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers (HCEG) was founded in Leith. It is the first verifiable organised golf club in the world - another first for Scotland.

The Club's records date continuously back to 1744, when it produced thirteen "Rules of Golf" for its first competition which was played at Leith Links for the "Silver Club". This trophy had been requested by the HCEG from the City of Edinburgh Council, which agreed. The first competition was won by John Rattray, who signed the rules and became the first club captain. The club played on the five holes at Leith Links for nearly a century.

In 1795 the Club applied to the Edinburgh Council for a charter. This was granted on 26 March 1800 under the new title of 'The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers'.

In 1891, the Club built a new private 18-hole course at Muirfield, taking the Open Championship with them.

The SNP seem to have no problems breaching the legislation that they hold in such high regard when it comes to certain people and organisations.

It is believed likely that, under equality legislation, being a member of the Orange Order would fall under the heading of a "protected characteristic", as other things such as being gay, transgender or Muslim are - all groups that the SNP are in favour of and are quick to complain about any perceived discrimination against.

But when it come to this particular gentleman, they are more than happy to ignore their stance on discrimination and isntead encourage discrimination against him. While the Orange Order may not be to everyone's taste, membership of it should not preclude someone from standing for political office. It appears that the SNP would like to ban anyone who is not fully in line with their thinking on social issues from public office. That is an unacceptable situation.

On this day in 1936 the Oor Wullie comic strip appeared for the first time in the Sunday Post newspaper.

Created by Thomson editor R. D. Low and drawn by cartoonist Dudley D. Watkins. Watkins continued to draw Oor Wullie until his death in 1969, after which the Post recycled his work into the 1970s. New strips were eventually commissioned from Tom Lavery, followed by Peter Davidson and Robert Nixon. Ken H. Harrison drew the strip from 1989 until 1997, when Davidson resumed duties. Between January 2005 and 2006 storylines were written by broadcaster Tom Morton from his home in Shetland, and subsequently they were written by Dave Donaldson, managing director of Thomson's comics division. The current writer is former Dandy editor Morris Heggie.

Between 2016 and 2017, artist Diego Jourdan Pereira filled in for Peter Davidson on Wullie, The Broons and Wee Harry. Jourdan Pereira also provided illustrations for the 2017 Annual and official merchandising.

In some areas of Scotland low earners are having to pay out half of their income on rent and even middle earners are having to pay a third. The situation is being made worse by rental agents for private rental properties allegedly asking people to bid higher than the advertised rents to secure accommodation.

This is a situation that cannot be allowed to carry on. It is leaving working people in working poverty and making their lives just a grind to get by with a basic level of existence.

The situation is being made far worse by social housing construction being at an all-time low and housing being handed to incomers while Scots sit on housing lists for years.

The SNP are failing the people of Scotland yet again by not controlling rents, by not investing in high levels of new social housing and by having a policy of importing people to our nation who are either handed social housing or put into private rental accommodation, putting upward pressure on rents.

On this day in 1566 David Rizzo, the Italian Private secretary of Mary ,Queen of Scots was murdered at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh .

David Rizzio was an Italian courtier, born close to Turin, a descendant of an ancient and noble family still living in Piedmont, the Riccio Counts di San Paolo e Solbrito, who rose to become the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots. Mary's husband, Lord Darnley, is said to have been jealous of their friendship because of rumours that Rizzio had impregnated Mary, and he joined in a conspiracy of Protestant nobles to murder him, led by Patrick Ruthven, 3rd Lord Ruthven. Mary was having dinner with Rizzio and a few ladies-in-waiting when Darnley joined them, accused his wife of adultery and then had a group murder Rizzio, who was hiding behind Mary. Mary was held at gunpoint and Rizzio was stabbed numerous times. His body took 57 dagger wounds. The murder was the catalyst of the downfall of Darnley, and had serious consequences for Mary's subsequent reign.
Scots farmers are seeing their costs surge by over 200%, with the price of feed, fuel, fertiliser and other commodities rising rapidly.

This is sure to bring more pain to Scots consumers. Again, part of the blame must be laid at the feet of the UK and Scots governments. They have failed to exploit the energy resources that we have on our doorstep and have rejected the nuclear power option all in a rush to go green. We have been left reliant on Imports of energy and fuel. One of the main priorities of any government should be to achieve fuel security for its nation.

We have also over the years become reliant on food imports, now having the crazy situation where we actually pay farmers not to put good farming land into use producing food for our people. Food security should be another issue high on any government's agenda, making sure we are as self-sufficient as possible in food supplies. But successive governments have failed to do this.

Argyle and Bute Council have been criticised after pictures were published showing skips full of Gaelic educational resources ready to be dumped.

It is an unacceptable situation both in terms of waste of money and misuse of resources meant for teaching the Gaelic language in Scotland.

For years the Gaelic language has been in decline in Scotland, in part due to bans on its use starting in 1606 and further suppression after the 1745 rising.

We should be doing everything that we can to increase the use and teaching of Gaelic. If these resources could not be used in this area they should have been redeployed to areas where they are needed rather than dumped.

It is vital that we do everything we can to reinvigorate Scottish traditions and culture.
