Adam Smith lived from 5 June 1723 to 17 July 1790. He was a hugely influential political economist and moral philosopher whose book An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations founded the modern academic discipline of economics. The wider picture in Scotland at the time is set out in our Historical Timeline.
Some have argued that this was a sign he was destined for the clergy (given the stated aims of the scholarship), but he returned from Oxford having abandoned his religious beliefs.
From 1748 Smith was commissioned by Lord Kames to give a series of public lectures at the University of Edinburgh. These covered a variety of subjects, but included themes such as "the progress of opulence" and "the obvious and simple system of natural liberty" which were to form the foundations of his later work. In about 1750 Smith met David Hume, whose ideas meshed closely with his own.
Adam Smith returned to Glasgow University in 1751, taking up the Chair of Logic. The following year he became Chair of Moral Philosophy. Areas covered in his courses included ethics, rhetoric, jurisprudence, political economy, and "police and revenue". In 1759 Smith published The Theory of Moral Sentiments drawing on his Glasgow lectures. The book established Smith's reputation as a leading thinker of his day.
In 1763 Smith was offered a well paid position as tutor to the young Duke of Buccleuch. Between 1764 and 1766 Adam and his pupil travelled widely across Europe, coming into contact with many renowned academics of the day, including Voltaire, Rousseau, Franklin, Turgot, Jean D'Alembert, André Morellet, Helvétius and Francois Quesnay.
Smith returned to Kirkcaldy in 1766, and spent most of the next decade writing An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, which was published in 1776. The book was written for the average educated individual of the day rather than for specialists, making it widely accessible. This in turn helped ensure its considerable success.
The Wealth of Nations became one of the most influential books ever written. It is a well written account of the state of the political economy at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution; makes a comprehensive case for free market policies; and is generally accepted to be the first modern work in the field of economics. Its five books were published as two volumes. At a stroke, all earlier work in the field was defunct, and academics turned their attention to the development of Smith's ideas into what became known as Classical Economics. This in turn (by very different routes) formed the basis of Modern Economics and Marxist Economics. The ideas behind the book are best summed up in a single quote:
"It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages."
In 1778 Adam Smith became Commissioner of Customs in Scotland and lived with his mother in Edinburgh. He died on 17 July 1790, and was buried in the kirkyard of Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh's Royal Mile. At the time of his death he is thought to have been working on two books, one on the theory and history of law, and one on the sciences and arts. However he left instructions that his literary executors, scientist Joseph Black and geologist James Hutton, were to destroy any manuscripts or notes not immediately fit for publication. His Essays on Philosophical Subjects was posthumously published in 1795, but there is a widespread belief that a great deal of valuable work that should have been kept, was destroyed under the terms of his will.

Adam Smith's memory lives on in many ways. The Adam Smith Institute, based in London since 1977, is "Britain’s leading innovator of free-market economic and social policies." At a more everyday level, Smith's picture also appears on the £50 note that has been issued since 2003 by Scotland's Clydesdale Bank. And from Spring 2007 he appears on the Bank of England £20 note, the first Scotsman ever to have his picture on a Bank of England note.
In many ways the free market has been bad for our Nations, but we must acknowledge how a Scot like Smith has had a major influence on the world around us. We must look beyond the unrestrained free market policies of the last decades to a system that will benefit all the people of our country.

There is clearly something wrong with the legal system in Scotland when a serial rapist is free to walk the streets after 6 years. When someone who is convicted of multiple rapes including against a 15 year old girl receives only 9 and a half years in jail. Sentencing needs to be looked at and early release stopped.
Rape and sexual assault are a growing problem within our country with low conviction rates. its time that more resources and legal changes were made to better protect the women of our country and give them justice. Rape can have a lifelong devastating effect on people's lives, even leading to some to take their own lives.

On this day in 1333 was the battle of Halidon Hill diring the second Scottish War of Independence. It was an attempt to lift the siege of Berwick-upon-Tweed by English forces. Sadly the Scottish forces were heavily defeated with 1000s killed including the army's commander Sir Archibald Douglas and 5 Scottish earls. Many more died trying to escape the battlefield or were put to the sword on Edward's orders after surrendering.
The English forces under Edward III and disinherited Scottish noble Edward Balliol received very light casualties. The defeat of the Scottish army led to the surrender of Berwick, Balliol ceding the 8 south east Counties of Scotland to England taking control of much of Scotland and declaring himself King while restoring the disinherited nobles to their lands, dispossessing others loyal to King David and continuing resistance to Balliol. Which saw him deposed in 1334, restored again in 1335 and finally deposed again in 1336 by those loyal to the then 7-year-old King David the Second.

The SNP will again today try to work against the best interests of the Scottish People by tabling a reasoned amendment that, if passed, would deny the Nationality and Borders Act a second reading on the grounds it breaches the outdated UN convention on the status of refugees. A convention that Scotland and the UK would be much better off leaving.
The SNP is pro immigration and on all the evidence that is plain to see would seek to flood Scotland with "refugees" and immigrants given the chance. The SNP cynically support immigration knowing the immigrants will probably support them - also the reason they have given everyone and their dog a vote.
The SNP should concentrate on actually running Scotland well, fixing the mess they have made of things such as education and the health service, instead of trying to boost the population by importing third world "migrants", many of whom judging by the experience of places like Germany will never work. They should encourage the Indigenous People to have more children.

Ook so this happened.
The vote was twice unanimous, no mistakes about it. It really is a 'White Boy Summer!'
However we’re not boys, we are Men. Whilst the founding of this movement is a little sketchy, this IS an Art Challenge and probably the hardest challenge to date for some of us as creatives!
Let's try to make this meme our own, hopefully elevating it and celebrating white males this summer regardless of Gender.

Teaching 11 to 18 year olds to parade around in drag and that sex is interchangeable and a game/performance is not a thing that should be allowed to go ahead. Drag itself is not for children; it can be classified as a performance for adults with its sexual element.
It of course fits into the agenda of the powers that be such as Stonewall with their constant pushing of the trans agenda in schools and with programs such as their School Champion Awards. Dumfries seems a rather strange place for this to be happening in.

On this day is Scottish history was the Battle of Inverkeithing which wasfought in 1652.
An English Parliamentary regime had tried and executed Charles I, who was king of both Scotland and England in a personal union, in January 1649. The Scots recognised his son, also Charles, as king of Britain and set about recruiting an army. An English army, under Oliver Cromwell, invaded Scotland in July 1650. The Scottish army, commanded by David Leslie, refused battle until 3 September when it was heavily defeated at the Battle of Dunbar. The English occupied Edinburgh and the Scots withdrew to the choke point of Stirling.
On 17 July 1651, 1,600 English soldiers crossed the Firth of Forth at its narrowest point in specially constructed flat-bottomed boats and landed at North Queensferry on the Ferry Peninsula. The Scots sent forces to pen the English in and the English reinforced their landing. On 20 July the Scots moved against the English and in a short engagement were routed.

This day marks the death of Robert Burns in Dumfries in 1796.
Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, the National Bard, Bard of Ayrshire, the Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.
In recent years Burns, like many other historical figures, has been attacked over links to slavery. He accepted a job helping to manage a west Indian Plantation but never actually took up the job.

Parkin probed by council for links between the cake and colonialism
Connections between the ginger and treacle cake and colonialism will be probed in research by Leeds City Council
By Craig Simpson

It has been enjoyed as a Yorkshire delicacy since the 18th century.
But parkin - a cake made with ginger and treacle - will now have its international origins examined in a review of local cuisine launched to investigate links to the slave trade.
Connections between the cake and colonialism will be probed in research by Leeds City Council prompted by the Black Lives Matter protests, according to a report seen by The Telegraph.
Parkin is to be reviewed along with other local favourites like Yorkshire Tea over their potentially problematic ingredients.
A council document claims: “Historically, some of the ingredients used to make these ‘local’ products were gained through the triangular slave trade (for example, sugar).”
It appears that even your cake is racist now. Well, at least Laura will get the last laugh, though with the growing success of Granny Towler's tea i am sure she has been having a good giggle anyway. But it seems the council is not only going to probe your Yorkshire cake as racist but Yorkshire Tea itself may be about to be declared a racist, colonial brand. Oh dear.

On this day in 1298, the Battle of Falkirk took place. It was one of the major battles in the First War of Scottish Independence. Led by King Edward I of England, the English army defeated the Scots, led by William Wallace. Shortly after the battle Wallace resigned as Guardian of Scotland.

A perv who sexually assaulted a woman on a train between Dunfermline and Edinburgh Haymarket has avoided prison.
Tulsi Ram Bhandari, 48, was travelling on a service between the locations when he assaulted the woman.
The incident happened at about 1pm on July 13, 2019.
Bhandari, from Dunfermline, was convicted of sexual assault at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on July 15 following a British Transport Police investigation.
He was sentenced to a 150 hours community payback order and placed on the sex offenders register for five years.
It appears if you are of an ethnic persuasion you can sexually assault Scottish women in public and get a community order that is probably less than you would get for graffiti. Where is the justice in Scotland?

On this day in 1745, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, landed on the Isle of Eriskay. His landing marked the start of the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. On the 19th of August he raised his father's standard at Glenfinnan and raised an army from the Clans that were still loyal to the Jacobite cause to march on Edinburgh.

This is why as part of our community outreach program Patriotic Alternative Scotland have been carrying out regular days of action to remove rubbish that is blighting our towns and beauty spots. We would urge anyone who cares about their community and nation to get involved in these activities.

While not really a fan of JK Rowling, it shows you the depths that trans supporting and left wing activists in general will go to.
They are totally intolerant of any views that are outside of what they find acceptable. They have no hesitation in using the threat of violence and in some cases actual physical violence to try to silence anyone they disagree with. They talk of equality and freedom but these things can only be on their very narrow terms.
The intolerant left and its fellow travellers in causes such as trans activism, BLM etc are the real threat to this country.
