op-ed: In defense of the Palestinian Authority: only because nobody has done soEndless criticism can be said, and rightfully so, against the West bank government. Most prominently, “security coordination” through which the PA is obliged to chase, arrest and hand over Palestinian resistors. Endless corruption by the PA bourgeoisie through market monopoly, sky-high taxation, nepotism, submission to neo-colonial “development projects” and the NATO NGO superstructure, sky-rocketing Zionist colonial expansion, and so on
How did this all begin?
Some favor to trace it back to the infamous Oslo Accords of 1993. Is that really the case then? Before Oslo, all of Palestine was under direct military control, including Gaza and the West Bank. The leadership of all parties had been in exile, operating from abroad, losing multiple wars, such as the devastating 1982 defeat in Lebanon, and facing endless oppression and expulsion by Arab regimes.
Oslo brought the leadership in, gave the land its first international recognition, and included many rights for Palestinians, such as military withdrawal from Gaza and the West Bank, its own foundations, ministries, passport, etc.
The accords were a contract, and Israel violated that contract. Why do we as Palestinians still consider ourselves still obliged, enslaved to that paper?
The agreement was signed in the same year the Soviet Union collapsed, and the world headed for 30 catastrophic years of unipolar American hegemony. Arafat knew that many resistance movements were about to collapse, and Netanyahu still calls Oslo “Israel’s biggest mistake”
Arafat’s plan was to guarantee the existence of Palestine until the global status changed, until a time would come when there would be no America to support Israel, and liberation could happen in a matter of days
This plan worked for years, until the fatal Palestinian mistake: The Second Intifada. It was no accident; they had been planning it for a decade. Sharon invaded Al-Aqsa to spark national religious outrage, and responded with violence to incite more violence. The Wall: the plan to surround the West Bank and Gaza with a separation barrier, was officially proposed by Yitzhak Rabin in 1992, ten years before its construction began. Israel needed an excuse, just like (the fake?) October 7, to lock Palestinians into a cage, slowly eat at them with settler-colonial cancer until there’s nothing left, then they’d have to comply and become brainwashed (like many Palestinians in the occupied 1948 lands now)
Arafat was against the Intifada! This is stated in a book by a closest of companions. He only joined forces when there was no stopping it, and his assassination was part of the plan. The destruction of Fatah, the newly emergent Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, was necessary; by 2006, the West Bank resistance was finished. Israeli tanks and Apaches went into Ramallah’s center and made sure that happened, and the Muqata'a was bombed on top of Arafat’s head. Nobody listened to the old man…
Enter president Abbas, to a country without an army, leader, power, international support, and with a checkpoint on every street. The country was destroyed, no infrastructure, economy, jobs, facilities, or any form of life. Give my people food, electricity, medicine, education, life, stop bombing them, and do whatever you want in exchange, said the new defeated president
The rules were clear: the new government is to be obedient, corrupt, neo-liberal, subservient, and secure. There was no other option. Any honorable man is to be killed, or join the ranks of thousands of life-serving prisoners. Classism is key, European money is abundant, and anyone who stands in the way shall disappear
Far out in the west coast, the intentionally radicalized green brigades wouldn’t take it. A coup against the PA, a takeover of Gaza, and fundamentalism funded by Israel and the US. The last nail in the coffin: splitting the Palestinian people in half, and two decades of civil war to come… the plan was complete.
(or... this could all be just my illusion)
