Trump’s Push to Reclaim Bagram Air Base Sparks Controversy and Geopolitical Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed calls to regain control of Afghanistan’s strategic Bagram Air Base, criticizing the Biden administration for the 2021 withdrawal and claiming the base “should never have been given” to the Taliban. Speaking during a UK press conference on September 18, Trump highlighted Bagram’s proximity to China, saying it is “an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” and stressed its geopolitical and strategic importance. He confirmed ongoing talks with the Taliban and warned on Truth Social that “bad things are going to happen” if the base is not returned to the U.S.

Afghan officials swiftly rejected the idea. Zakir Jalali, Second Political Director of Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry, stated that Afghans “have never accepted foreign military presence throughout history” and that the possibility was “completely rejected during the Doha talks and agreement.” The Taliban have consistently echoed this position, viewing U.S. occupation as contrary to their ideology and a threat to their legitimacy among rank-and-file fighters. Experts note that allowing U.S. troops back would risk defections, empower ISKP propaganda, and undermine the Taliban’s narrative of ending foreign occupation.

China also rejected Trump’s remarks. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that Afghanistan’s future should be determined by its people and warned that regional tension would be counterproductive. Analysts add that Russia, Iran, and other regional partners would similarly oppose any U.S. reoccupation of Bagram, highlighting the broader geopolitical sensitivities.

Bagram was the centerpiece of U.S. operations in Afghanistan for two decades, hosting tens of thousands of troops and extensive infrastructure. It offers strategic advantages, from regional counterterrorism operations to proximity for monitoring China, as well as access to Afghanistan’s mineral wealth, including rare earth elements. Trump has repeatedly emphasized the base’s “massive runways” and military value.

Even if negotiations progressed, a U.S. return would face enormous challenges. The Taliban’s ideological stance, regional opposition, threats from ISKP and al Qaeda, and potential missile risks from Iran make military reoccupation complex and potentially costly. Security analysts suggest it would require over 10,000 troops and advanced defenses, making any direct U.S. takeover highly unlikely.

Observers argue Trump’s push may be politically motivated. Domestically, it allows him to criticize the Biden administration’s withdrawal. Diplomatically, it could serve as leverage in prisoner negotiations and other engagements with the Taliban. Recent visits by U.S. envoys Zalmay Khalilzad and Adam Boehler to Kabul focused on such discussions, including potential prisoner swaps, economic ties, and limited engagement without military presence.

Experts remain skeptical. Political scientist Barnett Rubin called Trump “totally delusional,” while Afghan journalist Sami Yousafzai noted that regaining Bagram “is not an easy issue” and likely serves as pressure rather than a genuine operational plan. Analysts emphasize that handing Bagram to the U.S. would constitute “ideological suicide” for the Taliban, risking internal cohesion and alienating regional partners.

In conclusion, while Trump continues to publicly press for Bagram, the combination of Taliban ideology, Afghan sovereignty, regional opposition, and logistical challenges makes a U.S. return highly improbable. The Bagram debate reflects broader tensions over U.S. foreign policy in Afghanistan, regional geopolitics, and the enduring legacy of two decades of conflict.
