After several rounds of talks, Pakistani and Afghan business representatives reached a breakthrough on restoring closed trade routes. Both sides agreed to form a 12-member joint committee (six from each country) to address trade challenges and oversee the reopening of border crossings.

The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for January 6 at Torkham, where final decisions on reopening key trade routes are expected.

Senior FPCCI leaders, including Atif Ikram Sheikh and Syed Jawad Hussain Kazmi, and Afghan Chamber head Syed Karim Hashmi led the discussions. The committee will meet monthly to resolve bilateral and transit trade issues and remove obstacles faced by traders.

Officials expressed optimism that the initiative would revive cross-border trade and benefit traders and the public of both countries.

The Sindh CTD announced that a major militant plot targeting Karachi had been successfully disrupted.

Addressing a press briefing in Karachi alongside CTD Additional IG Zulfiqar Ali Larik, CTD DIG Ghulam Azfar Mahesar stated that intelligence from both internal and external sources had indicated an imminent attack on the city.

β€œThe militants were planning strikes on critical locations in Karachi with the intent to undermine national security,” Mahesar said. β€œIn response, intelligence agencies, the Special Branch, the Intelligence Bureau, and the Sindh and Balochistan CTDs coordinated a comprehensive strategy to neutralize the threat.”

According to Mahesar, intelligence operatives were deployed across multiple locations, with a particular focus on Karachi’s western region. Following days of sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering, authorities identified a militants hideout in Raees Goth, where militants had stockpiled a significant quantity of explosives.

β€œActing on this intelligence, CTD and the premier intelligence agency conducted a joint raid,” he said. β€œOne militant was apprehended on site, while three to four others fled. A targeted search operation is underway to ensure their capture.”

During the operation, authorities recovered a Mazda truck loaded with explosive materials, including 30 drums and five cylinders of explosives, 2,000 kilograms of additional explosive material, and detonators. Based on information provided by the arrested suspect, six further raids were conducted, leading to the capture of two additional militants, also in possession of explosives.

A total of three terrorists have now been arrested. They have been identified as Niaz Qadir alias Gangu, Hamdan alias Fareed, and Jalil Ahmed alias Fareed. Initial interrogation revealed their links to the Bashir Zeb network of the BLA and the Majeed Brigade.

Mahesar emphasized that further investigations and interrogations are ongoing. Authorities have identified the facilitators and handlers behind this network, who orchestrated the attack planning from abroad. Multiple teams are actively pursuing their arrests.

β€œThe explosives recovered were fully operational and ready for deployment,” Mahesar said, calling the seizure a significant achievement for all agencies involved in preventing a potentially catastrophic attack in Karachi. He added that the explosives included a combination of commercial and smuggled materials, some routed through Balochistan’s mountainous regions.

Further details on the operation and ongoing investigations will be shared at a later stage.
