Bannu DIG Sajjad Khan Briefs Media on Security Operations in 2025
Bannu Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Sajjad Khan informed the media that Bannu Police faced a significant wave of militant attacks this year. According to official data, during 2025, 134 attacks targeted police stations, posts, checkpoints, mobile units, and patrol teams. In these assaults, 27 police personnel were martyred and 79 injured. In response, police eliminated 53 militants and injured 163 others.
Key targeted locations included Meryan Police Station, Huwed Police Station, Mazanga Check-post, Fatehpur, and Ahmed Zaib Police Station. Militants also attempted to strike peripheral posts but were repelled each time.
DIG Khan highlighted that 168 intelligence-led operations were conducted across the district, resulting in the arrest of 105 militants and the neutralization of 65 others. Overall, coordinated operations successfully neutralized 170 terrorists.
Joint operations with security forces were carried out in Meryan, Huwed, Pindakhel, Barganito, Daud Shah, Mamand Khel, and Domel. During these operations, one police constable was martyred, 11 personnel were injured, and five civilians sustained injuries.
As a result of these operations, 22 militants were killed and four were arrested, and several militants hideouts and houses were also demolished.
Militants conducted 20 drone attacks targeting police installations and civilians, resulting in 19 police injuries, nine civilian fatalities, and 33 civilian injuries. After the installation of an anti-drone system on July 18, over 300 drone attacks were thwarted, and five drones neutralized, demonstrating significant operational improvement.
Despite limited resources, Bannu Police enhanced security at key installations through barriers, bunkers, double perimeter walls, bullet-proof gates, and CCTV surveillance. Work has also begun on the Safe City Project to further secure police personnel and civilians.
For coordinated counter-terrorism efforts, jirgas with local elders were conducted, leading to the formation of peace committees((Chagha Parties). Public cooperation helped prevent attacks on multiple police stations and check-posts, and enabled effective operations in Kakki, Bharath, Khojri, Bargantu, Sheikh Landak, and other areas.
To modernize the force, Bannu Police has been equipped with drones, anti-drone guns, sniper rifles, armored personnel carriers (APCs), thermal imaging devices, tactical helmets, and bulletproof vehicles.
DIG Khan reaffirmed that Bannu Police remains committed to maintaining law and order, eliminating terrorism, and protecting the lives and property of the public.

Ikramuddin Sariq, a former Afghan police commander and anti-Taliban figure, who served as police chief of Baghlan and later Takhar provinces under the government of Ashraf Ghani, was shot dead in Tehran on Wednesday while leaving his office. He was targeted along with two companions; one was killed and another wounded. Sariq was rushed to hospital but died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Iranian police have not commented on the incident, and no group has claimed responsibility. Sariq was widely known as an active pro-resistance, anti-Taliban figure, though he was arrested by Iranian authorities in 2024. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, with possibilities ranging from his opposition to the Taliban and his arrest in Iran to personal or political disputes dating back to his tenure as a senior police official. He was also involved in internal rivalries among anti-Taliban factions and recently headed the Grand Shura of Shamali.
Ali Meysam Nazari, head of foreign relations of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, confirmed the killing and accused the Taliban of being behind the attack.
This marks the second killing of a Taliban opponent in Iran in recent months. Four months earlier, Maroof Ghulami, an Afghan former jihad-era commander residing in Mashhad, was also shot dead.
