A significant liquid hammer event on a flair line at the top level of a pipe rack resulted in pipe movement at the expansion loop. The 18” stainless steel flair line had welded shoes with horizontal guides to restrict line movement. Two support locations immediately before and after the expansion loop received damage as the line moved horizontally out of position.
For support of pipe where longitudinal movement may occur due to expansion and contraction and where vertical adjustment is not necessary

Spring support failure due to thermal displacement and friction load
Pipe hangers and supports, which support piping from above (hangers) or below (props), alleviate stress on pipes as they transport fluids from one location to another. An improper supporting system spaced too far apart adds stress to piping and may cause damage to the entire system, leading to fractures, sagging pipes, and leaks.
