Why the Bible Speaks of Wine and Not Grape Juice

The Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments, consistently refers to wine as a fermented, alcoholic drink, not grape juice. The Hebrew word yayin and the Greek oinos always meant real wine. This is clear from Noah becoming drunk (Genesis 9:21), the psalmist praising wine that “gladdens the heart of man” (Psalm 104:15), and Paul warning against drunkenness (Ephesians 5:18). Such passages would make no sense if the drink were unfermented juice. At the wedding at Cana, Jesus miraculously changed water into wine, and the steward marveled that the “good wine” had been saved for last (John 2:10). The quality and context make it evident that it was true wine, capable of intoxication. Likewise, Paul encouraged Timothy to “use a little wine” for his health(1 Timothy 5:23), showing its practical and medicinal value in the ancient world. The Church Fathers also affirm this. Saint Justin Martyr describes the Eucharist as“bread and wine mixed with water”(First Apology,65)
